"You're engaged?!" Duke's eyes widen as he grabs onto my hand, examining the large rock on my finger.
"Yes." I let out a breath as a small smile forms on my face.
"Wow, I'm speechless." He swings the seat belt over his body and adjusts himself in the passenger seat of my car. "Well, congratulations."
"Thank you. I can't believe it either." My cheeks turn pink as I slowly drive away from the hospital.
"So, I guess you'll be busy planning a wedding now." A deep chuckle comes out of his mouth.
I stay silent at his words while gripping on the steering wheel. "It's not going to be for a few years."
"Wait, years?" He furrows his eyebrows in confusion.
"Grayson is turning himself in." I quietly whisper. The words pain me to say. It feels like somebody stabbed me in the chest.
More silence takes over the car as my eyes focus on the road in front of me. It takes Duke awhile to process my words.
"Wow." Duke whispers after a long pause. "I guess I was wrong."
"About what?"
"Him being a bad guy."
I nervously gulp as I glance at him sitting next to me. "He's willing to give up everything to catch Bodhi."
"That's selfless, Savannah." Duke tells me the words I dreaded on hearing. "You really changed him."
"I don't want him to do it." I admit with a sigh. "Especially since he proposed."
"It's a big commitment." He lets out a breath. "But now you can make sure your love for him is real."
"It is." I quickly nod my head. "I just hate the idea of losing him, I love him so much."
"You didn't lose him." He goes back at me. "He's yours forever, no matter what happens."
"How long do you think he'll get?" Goosebumps form on my skin as I look back at him.
He exhales a deep breath while thinking about it for a moment. "Maybe ten years? It depends on what the judge wants to do."
"Ten years." I repeat his words.
"He hasn't killed anyone, he might get less." He tries to make light of a dark situation.
"It doesn't matter, Grayson is going to jail." I mumble while turning onto another street.
"I know you don't want to hear this, but he did it for you." Duke's low voice fills the silent car.
"I know." I let out another breath as I pull into the parking lot of the dreadful police building. "I want to support him when he comes in. Plus, Angelo requested to see us."
"Oh no." Duke groans while rolling his eyes. "I can just imagine how this conversation will go."
"Definitely not good." I unbuckle my seatbelt and step out of the car. I walk around to the other side to help Duke. He still has a large bandage covering his shoulder while his wound tries to heal.
"I guess I need to take some time off." He laughs as he wraps his arm around my shoulder. I use my strength to hold his body up.
"You think?" I laugh as we walk toward the inside of the large building.
It's crazy to think almost two months ago I stepped in here for the first time. I was so hopeful and determined to start working on the masked phantom case. Now, it all seems like a distant memory.
