My heart is pounding against my chest at a rapid speed. It feels like my entire body is numb, unable to feel a single movement. My feet stay glued in front of the closed wooden door. I have been building up the courage to knock on it for about ten minutes now.
Grayson's advice has finally gotten under my skin. It's been a few days since we spent time together, in order for him to sort things out. He's trying to distract Bodhi from robbing another bank.
I slowly bring my hand up and bang my knuckles along the wooden door. There's no going back now.
"Come in." The accent calls out.
My shaky hand turns the knob as I push the door open. Duke is sitting at his desk looking through a few files. He lifts his head up, seeing me in the doorway. "Jacobs, hey."
I quickly enter his office and shut the door behind me. I let out a deep breath before turning back around. Tears are already filling my blue-grey orbs.
His eyes widen once he sees how upset I am. "What's wrong?" He quickly stands up from his chair.
"I have to tell you something." I can't help but sob.
"What is it?" All of the color drains from his face as he places both of his hands on my shoulders.
"I've been lying to you, Duke." It shocks me how quickly I break down.
"What do you mean?" His soft voice asks.
"I can't hide it from you anymore, I need your help." I say through my heavy tears.
"Shhh, calm down." He gently runs his hands up and down my arms. "What do you need my help with?"
"You're going to fucking hate me." I shake my head while closing my eyes. The pain is already seeping through my core.
"Savannah, you're scaring me." I hear him say. "Tell me what's going on."
"It's about the masked phantoms." I slowly push the words out. Silence fills the room as I open my eyes. Through the wetness I can see him clenching his jaw.
"What about them?" He says above a whisper.
"I know who they are." I finally stutter.
"What the hell are you talking about?" He removes his hands from my shoulders. "There is no way you could possibly-"
"It's Grayson." My shaky voice says.
He blinks a few times, a shocked expression painting his face. "Excuse me?"
"Grayson and his group of friends are the masked phantoms." Reality is hitting me that this nightmare is real. I never thought I would speak those cold words out loud.
Duke's jaw hangs low, practically hitting the carpet. "That's why you've been quiet about them?"
I nod my head, not wanting to use my words.
"How long have you known?" He lets out a breath, his face turning a tint of red.
"A little over a week, since we chased them."
"Are fucking joking?" He loudly yells. "You knew this past week and you didn't say anything?"
"You need to hear me out, please." I quickly speak up before he flips out. "Bodhi is the man with the turtleneck. He's the one in charge, the one who created the masked phantoms."
"Why the fuck have you been keeping this from me? It's your job to arrest them!" The veins are popping out of his neck at this point.
"Bodhi is the only one we need to arrest, the others are innocent." I try to explain more.
