I walk through the noisy atmosphere of the crowded bar. It's located three blocks away from my new apartment, which is convenient for me. My eyes look around for Duke, but I don't spot him anywhere.
I confidently strut up the counter, a few men turn their heads to look at me. I tied the ends of my white shirt into a bow, showing off my stomach. Light denim shorts hug my waist and silver hoop earrings are placed in my ears. I left my hair down and wavy, which is what I usually do.
"What can I get you?" A man with longer blonde hair asks me.
"Uh, I'm supposed to be working here." I lowly whisper to him.
"Savannah Jacobs?" He quietly asks.
"That would be me." I say while leaning into the bar.
"I'm Patrick, come in the back." He nods while stepping away from me.
I nod my head and make my way around the counter. I follow him into the back room, where Duke is sitting down in a chair.
"Now you're late." He says while eyeing me.
"You are now officially employed here." Patrick laughs while looking at me. The smell of cigarettes radiates off his breath.
"What do I do?" I raise my eyebrows.
"Have you ever been to a pub before?" Duke shakes his head. "You serve drinks, make the people happy."
"Mingle with the guys that pass through." Patrick shrugs.
"So you're using me for my body?" I look at them in annoyance.
"And your pretty face." Patrick adds with a grin.
"Who says I want to be sexualized like this?" I scoff.
"You wore the appropriate outfit." Duke eyes me.
"What I wear doesn't mean shit." I shake my head back and forth.
"Are you sure this girl is in the force?" Patrick looks back at him.
"Yup, she just needs to get used to it." He rises from his seat. "Come on partner, I'll show you everything you need to know."
"This is dumb, shouldn't we be digging into more files on the robberies?" I let out a sigh.
"I have been doing that for months, love. They've been quiet for a few days." Duke opens up the door and steps back into the bar. Loud rock music blasts through my ears as I trail behind him. A few other men are working behind the counter, so I'm not the only one.
"Do you know what beer is?" Duke says with a straight face.
"Yes, I'm not twelve." I roll my eyes in annoyance.
"You take a glass from the shelf, and you pour it under the dispenser. Foamy liquid fills the cup and then you hand it to the customer. Or, even better, you can just hand them a bottle from the fridge over there." He points around, trying to make me understand.
"I get that, but what about mixed drinks?" I sigh.
"I can handle those, just let me know." He slowly gets closer and leans into my ear. "This isn't a real job, every worker in here is undercover."
My eyes shift around the large bar. I have to admit this is a smart move. Nodding my head, I turn away from my partner and glance to the men sitting around the bar. I see one waving his arms, so I approach him with a smile.
"What can I get you tonight, sir?" This little acting role could be fun, if I'm careful.
"Just a Corona." He smirks.
