My entire body fills with anxious nerves as I pull the door open to the office building. I got a call last night that I didn't like, at all. Once I enter the elevator, I press the button to the third floor. I tap my heel along the ground as I impatiently wait to get to my destination. The metals doors ding open, and I'm faced with the bank robbery department. I grip onto my briefcase as I step out of the small space.
Instead of going to Duke's office, I go where I am angrily requested. Goosebumps take over my skin as I'm faced with Angelo's closed wooden door. My knuckles move up to hit on it.
"Come in." His voice booms from the inside.
I slowly open the door, peeking my head in. My boss turns to look at me along with my partner. Duke lets out a breath as he looks at me with frustrated eyes.
"You wanted to see me, sir?" My nervous voice squeaks.
"Yes, now that the two of you are here we can get this little meeting started." He crosses his arms over his chest.
I stand next to Duke, who is leaning against Angelo's desk.
"I heard some news." He begins, his voice getting louder by the second. "News that I didn't like."
I stay quiet, not even knowing what to say.
"I go away on a business trip to New York for a weekend, giving the two of you one simple task. Stand guard and watch the bank. What do the two of you do instead? Let the criminals get away!"
"Angelo, it isn't-" Duke begins, only to be cut off.
"I'm not finished." He says through gritted teeth. "You had them in sight, you ran after them-"
"We didn't have backup." I interrupt him. "It was two against four."
"I don't give a crap! You had weapons on you, correct?" He turns his attention toward Duke. "Or were you running around with your dick in your hands?"
"We couldn't get a clear shot due to the fast movement." Duke tries to stay calm, but I know he wants to punch Angelo straight across the face.
"Two fucking years." My boss looks between the two of us. "We have been on this case for two years, and now they know that."
I look down at the carpeted floor in his office. I keep thinking back to Grayson. God, this entire mess is getting worse and worse as the days go by.
"Putting the two of you together was the biggest mistake I could have made. It's like the blind leading the blind." He shakes his head in disappointment.
"Angelo, calm down." Duke finally speaks up. "Next time, we'll get half of the department to catch these guys. They're too fucking quick, that's the issue. They're ghosts, remember?"
"From Asher Dunhill being falsely accused, to this. Do you not know how to be an FBI agent?" Angelo looks directly at me, his blue eyes staring into the depths of my soul. "Jacobs, you were supposed to be the best of the best."
"I am, sir." My voice isn't shaking anymore, it's loud and clear. "It was one mishap."
"One mishap can cost you everything. Now the masked phantoms are roaming around on the streets. Did you even get a chance to identify them? See who it was?"
Duke shakes his head. "No, I said-"
"I'm asking Special Agent Jacobs." Angelo takes a step closer to me. "Did you get a good, long look at the man you chased?"
I gulp as hard as I can, trying not to appear nervous. I got a good, long look and saw my fucking boyfriend.
"No, sir." Is all I manage to say. I can't believe I just lied to my boss.
