He was one of those highlighters
the bright eccentric ones that stood out from the pages
You'd think because his confidence was pointed out
he wouldn't have any doubt
We would sit on the bleachers
or next to each other in class
And we'd talk about everything
Usually on how to go about living our dash
You'd inspire me and give me aspirations
Even if they were in the form of simple salutations
If only I'd stop to be more genuine
and return the compliment "You're a gentleman."
You brought me out of my shell
A place where I thought I'd permanently dwell
Your encouragement caused me to go for things now
and i looked forward to do so with thou
Be it today or sometime in May
But then you were absent for a day, a week, and a lifetime
I couldn't believe you weren't going to see the sunrise
I tried to stay strong the next few days
To focus and busy myself with several essays
The weeks passed by in haze
And I often find myself with an empty gaze
He was one of those highlighters
the one's that color, personality, and soul shone through
Although you aren't here
our relationship is still there
You may not be the highlight of today's reverie
but you'll always be a highlight in my memory.
