I tapped my pencil on my desk as I blew some of my hair out of my eyes. Remind me again why I took calculus. It was Wednesday and I was in the middle of writing a huge test that had FAILURE written all over it. Well not literally, but that’s how I felt.
“You have about 15 more minutes.” My teacher announced.
Shit. I was in the middle of the second page and there were 4 pages in total. There’s no doubt that I’m screwed.
I looked around the classroom and saw that most people were on the very last page. Some were even in the process of checking their work before handing it in.
‘Shit, focus Skye. You can do this.’ I thought.
I don’t know why even bothered lying to myself. It was clear that I was going to fail this test.
I skipped the question that I was on and moved on to the next one.
‘Oh, this one’s easy.’ I quickly did the calculation and went to the next question, which was on the third page.
‘All you have to do is focus on your work and you’ll finish on time.’ I tried to encourage myself. I quickly did the 12 questions that were on the third page and turned to the very last page.
“5 more minutes. You should be wrapping it up and checking your work by now.” My teacher said. She gave me a look, which probably meant that she was going to talk to me after class.
I looked at the fourth page and realized that it was 2 word problems, aka the reasons I was having problems in this course.
I read the first problem and recognized it to be the exact same thing as an example we went through in class. I searched my mind for any memory of what happened in that class.
‘Maybe you’d remember if you weren’t so busy thinking about Joseph all the time.’ I hated it when the voice in my head was right.
Then, I started to remember the first few steps to solving the problem. I figured out the rest of the steps while I was in the process of doing the work.
“2 minutes.” My teacher announced again. I looked around the class and realized that I was the only one with a test on my desk. Everyone was watching me.
I stared at the very last question, and realized that I had no idea what to do. I decided that it would be safe to do exactly what I did in the question above. Then the bell rang.
“Alright, all tests have to come in now.” My teacher said. I quickly finished off the last step and handed her the test.
I picked up my backpack and walked out of the room, glad that I was going to gym class.

After lunch, I walked into my English class and sat down at my usual seat.
My teacher walked in right after me and looked around at the full room. “You have the period to work with your groups on your assignment. Use it wisely.”
From across the room, I saw Lisa come to where I was sitting and pull up a chair by my desk. Lisa’s actually really pretty. I mean, if she let her hair down and decided to dress in something other than jeans that were a bit too baggy and plain t-shirts, she’d probably have every guys’ eyes on her. And her personality would be the perfect bonus.
Ken came shortly after but Dylan was no where in sight. I swear he was here this morning. After all, I have him in all my classes.
Sure enough, he strolled into class and gave our teacher a short wave. I hated how he thought he was the most amazing thing to ever be created.
“Wow, it’s so nice of you to decide to come by and help us on our project.” I said sarcastically.
“The pleasure’s all mine, really.” He said with a stupid smirk on his face. He pulled up a chair and joined our little circle. “But if you must know, the coach wanted to talk to the MVP.” He had a cocky look on his face.
“I never asked where you were. And since when were you on the football team?”
The cocky look on his face instantly turned to a scowl. “Do you not go to any games?” He asked.
“No, I never found a reason to go.” I said.
“Your boyfriend’s on the team as well.” He said.
“I’m aware. But there haven’t been any home games since Joseph and I got together, so I never got to watch.” I said.
He rolled his eyes and leaned back in his chair. Lisa was right beside him, and I could tell she was feeling a little insecure. She totally liked him, no doubt.
“Anyways, do you guys wanna meet up at my place tomorrow after school to work on this thing?” I asked.
“Sure, what time?” Ken asked.
I thought about it for a moment. “How about 5:00?”
Lisa and Ken nodded while Dylan didn’t say anything.
I let out a sigh of frustration. “Dylan, as much as I hate to remind myself, you are a part of this group which means that you are required to attend group meetings.” I said.
“Yeah.” He said.
I let out another sigh of frustration and turned to face Ken and Lisa. “So, lets try to get more of this thing done.”

After school, Joseph was waiting by my locker as usual. I smiled as him as he moved over a bit in order for me to open my locker.
“So…about the party on Friday-“
“I’m not changing my mind about it, Joseph.” I interrupted him.
“Awh, come on Skye. It’ll be fun.” He said.
“And what if I don’t find it fun?” I said, putting away my chemistry stuff.
“Then I’ll take you home as soon as you say you want to leave.” He said.
I sighed. “Fine, I’ll go.”
There was a huge grin on his face. “Awesome.” He gave me a quick peck. “Well I gotta run to practice, so I’ll see you around.”
“Bye.”
I turned back to face my locker.
“You’re going to Kevin’s party?” I turned back around and saw that Amy was standing right behind me.
“I guess.” I said.
“But you told me you weren’t in chemistry class.” She said.
“Yeah, but I decided that I’d go just so Joseph would stop trying to convince me. Besides, he said that he’ll take me home as soon as I say that I wanna leave, so that hour or so won’t be so bad.”
She laughed. “Trust me, you’ll have fun so you won’t be leaving in an hour.”
