“My dear Juliet, thou are so hot.” I took in a deep breath and flopped my arm down beside me.
“Dylan, you’re supposed to talk in the Shakespearean times way.” I said.
“Yeah but I shortened it.” He said.
“Will you just say the line the way it’s written?” I asked.
“But it’s so long and cheesy.” He complained.
“Just. Say. The. Line.” I slowly said. Lisa and Ken were watching us in amusement.
He took in one LONG dramatic breath. “Fine.” He muttered. “My dear Juliet. Thy eyes sparkle’th as the stars above.” He stopped talking.
“Go on.” I said, rolling my eyes.
“I’m just wondering why I have a whole paragraph JUST to tell you that you’re hot.” He said.
“Just say it.” I said.
“Can we shorten it?” He asked.
“How about we practice a different part for now?” Ken interrupted. He probably thought we were going to fight or something…which he was smart about.
“Fine.” Dylan and I said at the same time.
“Lets practice the last part, the one where they’re outside Juliet’s house.” Lisa Suggested. All of us turned to the second-last page.
The scene started out with Paris (Ken) and Romeo (Dylan) outside Juliet’s (me) house. Paris had just caught Romeo wandering around the area and decided that he’d kill him himself. Then Romeo and Paris started sword fighting and Lady Capulet (Lisa) came outside just when Romeo stabs Paris. Lady Capulet screamed and Juliet came running outside and was shocked to see Paris dead, but happy to see Romeo. Yeah, cheesy, I know. But we really couldn’t think of anything else.
We read our lines, then came the part where Dylan and I were supposed to kiss.
“I’m still not doing this.” I said. “Lets turn it into a hug or something.”
“But then it just looks stupid.” Ken said.
“Fine but do we have to practice it?” I asked.
“Yeah, so that you don’t hesitate like you did just now.” He said.
“But-“ I was interrupted by Dylan.
“We’ll be right back.” He said to Ken and Lisa. He pulled me out of the living room and into the kitchen.
“Okay; why is this such a big problem? It’s just a kiss.” He said.
“I’m not kissing you.” I said.
“We’ve done it before. Twice, actually. Once that night your family came for dinner and again two nights ago. That second time wasn’t just a kiss either.” He said.
“Yeah well you surprised me that night at your house and I was drunk two nights ago.” I said.
“Whatever, we’ll just hug at the end then.” He said.
He turned around but I stayed in my spot. “Wait.” He turned back to face me. “I’ll do it.” I walked up to him and he shrugged.
We went back to the living room where Lisa and Ken were sitting beside each other on the couch. “Okay, we’re ready.” I said.
We did the scene from the beginning.
It’s just one kiss.I told myself. I’m sure Lisa won’t mind, and I’m sure I won’t puke afterwards.
