Finn's frustration and anger still radiated off him in waves. He strode over the ground trampling twigs and rock underfoot with the force of a rabid Grounder. With his mouth set in a grim line, Clarke knew he was deliberately avoiding her as she trudged along at the back of the group. She had lied to his face, after all, but in the end, it had been to their benefit. 'At least they hadn't suffered death by spears and arrows' she thought to herself as if trying to console her mind that all hope was not lost. Endless thoughts of how she could repair relations with the Grounders clouded her mind until she came to the conclusion that the damage was almost definitely permanent.
The look on Anya's face had proven that.
She felt, most definitely, lost at the idea of war now brewing thanks to their actions which would provoke something they could not finish. Clarke knew that a group of partially-trained teenagers were no match for hundreds of Grounders who shared the same physique as Lincoln. They would have to start building a greater defence system while guarding the tunnels and weak spots all night and Raven would help with ammunition manufacture. The prospect seemed daunting, to say the least, as Clarke felt a sense of foreboding cloak her like a shadow from behind; enveloping her until she found it hard to focus on walking.
A tree root caught beneath her foot as she briefly lost her balance before an arm settled on her shoulder to steady her. As quickly as the hand had come, it was gone. She glanced over at the owner of the hand to see the same dark look in Bellamy's eyes as had been in hers, not moments before. She gave him a nod of thanks as they fell into step with one another, bringing up the rear of the party.
Bellamy glanced at Clarke to see her brow furrowing in worry as well as concentration. He knew full well what she was thinking about as they crossed a nearby stream and hopped onto the grassy bank occupying the other side. He had been thinking the same thing since they'd made their escape from the bridge and knew that there was bound to be retaliation.
They walked side-by-side for a while in a semi-comfortable silence and Bellamy began to notice Clarke's eyes always wandering to rest on the back of Finn's head. He knew that there was something between them since they both seemed to be natural peacemakers together, but Bellamy couldn't help but feel a stab of anger towards Finn. In his mind he had seen the looks Clarke would give Finn and it seemed that Bellamy was the only one who had noticed Clarke's anxious and heartbroken state when Raven had arrived at Camp. Also, with Finn's attitude hell-bent on opposing everything Bellamy did and his reckless behaviour that always seemed to rope Clarke into some dangerous escapade, made Bellamy want to knock him out cold every once in a while.
Yet every time he glanced at Clarke to see that all too common forlorn look in her eyes, that seemed to be the only way she would show what she was really feeling on her features, Bellamy knew his intervention on the matter would only make the look on Clarke's face worse.
The lights of the drop ship slowly began to flicker through the trees as the half-dark surrounded the group of dirt-ridden teenagers. Most of them couldn't wait to get to their beds and as shouts surrounded them in an announcement of their return, Bellamy and Clarke sped up to the front as the gate swung open with a groan.
Clarke felt a tugging in her chest that hadn't gone away since Finn had started ignoring her. She knew she shouldn't feel this way since he had Raven now and she had been the one who wanted to end it and deny that it had meant anything. She knew she was in denial. Her eyes tried to remain on the floor before they looked up to land on Bellamy who stood facing Octavia, who briskly strode into camp followed by a very annoyed Jasper. Clarke barely had time to register anything before Finn strode past her, almost pushing her out of the way. She swallowed heavily as Raven followed suit leaving her and Bellamy as the only ones left outside the gate.
