Missing in Action
Chapter Ten
Louis P.O.V
Before I opened my eyes, I breathed in deeply. The familiar smell of the washing powder that I had grown up with was everywhere. I sighed contently.
I had gotten home late last night. I had left London at around 1:30 pm, but as usual, the traffic was awful. I suppose I was beginning to get used to the clogged London streets, I had been in worse. New York always seemed bad whenever we were there on tour.
I looked at the clock on my bedside table and groaned. It was 9:30.
The sun was shining through the curtains. The room was warm, meaning the sky was probably blue. I could have stayed there all day, but I knew I had to get up at some point.
I groaned again as I removed myself from under the bed covers and grabbed some clothes before heading to the shower.
I could hear the radio downstairs and my mum was humming along to it. I smiled. She had been so happy over the past few months.
I showered and dressed. Then, I sprinted down the stairs.
My mum was in the kitchen cleaning the work tops. She was still humming.
"Morning!" I said.
She jumped and yelped.
"Jesus! I wasn't expecting you to be up yet," she said before she gave me a hug and kissed my cheek.
"Are you trying to say that I'm lazy?" I demanded dramatically.
"You used to be," my mum shrugged before going back to her work.
I sat down at the table. I was sat opposite from the bottle of Detol that stood on the side closest to my mum.
"Where is everyone?" I asked.
"Well Daisy and Pheobe are at a friends house, Lottie is still asleep, Fizzy is in her room and the twins are in their room as well," my mum replied as she started to clean the table.
I got up and made a cup of tea for both of us. I handed the cup to my mum and we both sat down at the table.
My mum studied me for a moment. I felt uncomfortable under her gaze.
"Have you heard from Cassidy recently?" she asked.
I sighed.
"Not for a few weeks," I replied. "Why do you ask?"
She got up and walked to one of the draws where she keeps a letter opener and any important letters. She plucked a brown envelope out and handed it to me.
"What's this?" I asked.
"Open it," my mum replied bluntly.
I turned the enevelope over a few times. The address was written in Cassidy's loopy handwriting. The enelope was still sealed.
"When did this arrive?" I asked.
"About two weeks after she left," my mum replied.
"Why haven't you opened it?" I asked.
"I don't know what to expect," she replied with a shrug.
I stared at her and she shrugged again. I wonder if she had felt like I did last night. I felt that something bad had happened, but I didn't know what.
I sighed and opened the envelope. If something bad had happened, it would not be in this letter. The letter was written on blue paper. I took it out and unfolded it. There was a two photos with it. Both were the same; Cassidy in her new uniform.
"She's never sent a letter here before," my mum said. "Normally, one of her brothers rescues the letter for us before their mum gets hold of it".
I began to read the letter.
Dear Jay,
I need advice. I don't what to do about my mum and with your wedding coming up, I don't want anything to go wrong for you.
My point is: my mum stopped answering my calls. Edward said that she burnt the letters that I send her and that he had to hide all of the photos of me.
Jay, I know that your stressed with all of the wedding stuff, but I really need your help.
Can you also give one of the photos to Edward please?
Thanks Jay.
Your sincerely,
Cassidy.
I handed the letter to my mum to read. She scanned it over a couple of times and then placed it on the table.
"I knew it was bad, but I didn't realise that Jane was being this harsh on the poor girl," my mum said as she sat down again.
"I should've known when I went to see her that something was wrong," I said.
"Louis, there was nothing you could have done anyway. You know Cassidy doesn't open up to anyone," my mum said to try to comfort me.
"She's my best friend mum, I should know," I whispered.
She hugged me.
"You can talk to her at the wedding, but first, we need to get you a suit!" my mum exclaimed.
I smiled at her, but I couldn't help feeling bad for Cassidy. Her mum had somehow learnt to hate her.
My mum left the room to go and get ready, but I stayed at the table.
I picked one of the photos up off the table. Cassidy was in full uniform with all of her medals on. She looked far more serious than she had ever looked on any of her Navy photos.
"Why did you have to go Cassidy?" I sighed.
