Chapter Eleven

Cassidy's P.O.V

"She has to wake up at some point," a voice said.

I recognised it, but I couldn't put a name to it. It had sounded like it was coming from inside a tunnel.

I registered a dull pain throughout my body and my head was throbbing, but I was unable to move. I couldn't even open my eyes.

"It was bad though! When I saw it, it just felt like..." another voice stuttered out. I recognised that voice too.

"She was never going to die Ben," the first voice snapped.

"You're right, you're right. It's just that I was so worried! I've never seen anyone come down like that!" the voice that must be Ben said.

I had to wake up.

"I haven't either, but lets face it, only Cassidy Davis can land like that," the first voice said.

I wasn't sure what he meant. I couldn't remember landing the plane, and everything before that was a blur.

I tried to move, starting with my toes. The movement in my body gradually came back, but I was unable to open my eyes.

"Hey guys, how's she doing?" another voice asked. It sounded far away and it echoed off the walls.

"She's still out," Ben said.

"Why don't you two take a break and I'll sit with her for a bit," the new voice said.

I heard rustling and boots against the floor, a bit more rustling and then silence. A door closed loudly.

I tried again to open my eyes, but I still didn't succeed.

I felt a hand grab mine. It felt warm compared to my now cold fingers.

"You know that you don't look so intimidating when you're out cold," the voice told me.

I heard a long, deep sigh.

"Sometimes I wish you could see yourself. I wish that you could see how determined you get," the voice continued.

It fell silent.

"You asked me a question once, one that make me look at the world in a different way. You asked: if we have the money to kill people with war, why don't we have the money to help people? Cassidy, I don't know the answer to that question, but when you asked me a week after we met, I wondered why in earth you had joined the Navy. Now I understand why. You joined the navy to fight for peace didn't you. Cassidy, I should've listened to you, I knew that I should've, but I didn't. I will from now on because Cassidy... Cassidy I-" he didn't get to finish his sentence because I heard the door opening. His hand released mine and he jumped out of his chair.

"Did I scare you Lieutenant Oak?" a voice that could have only been that of the ship's doctor asked.

That was James? I wanted more than anything to ask him what he was going to say, but I didn't get chance. James just stormed out of the room with a quick "I should be going".

I opened my eyes in time to see him walk out of the door.

It took time to adjust to the bright lights, but I knew, even before I could see my surrounds, where I was. The faint smell of antiseptic was everywhere. The blinding whiteness of everything in the room except the grey, pipe-lined wall was painful.

"Good morning Lieutenant!" Private Henson chirped. He was the ship's doctor. He was a short man, and quite bulky (a fact I found amazing considering how much exercise we have to have in the Navy).
