Missing in Action
Chapter Twenty Eight
Louis' P.O.V
Stacey paced up and down the office. On occasion, she would run her hand through her already messy hair. Simon stood in the corner of the room watching her.
We were all at our management HQ. We had been called in after Stacey must have seen the tweet.
"I can't believe this!" she exclaimed.
Liam, who was sitting on my left tensed.
"What were you thinking Louis?" she said.
She wasn't going to screech at us, not today.
"Anyone else would have done the same thing," Harry said for me.
I hadn't been listening to much of what was being said. I was too busy thinking of the familiar pale silver eyes and blonde hair that belonged to Cassidy. Was she already dead? Would she try to make contact with us if she escaped where she was being held?
I had only spoken a few words since James had been to tell us.
"A Navy officer! Why does you boys always have to be involved with something weird?" Stacey ranted.
We stayed silent.
I could see that she wanted to scream at us and she wanted to scream at me.
"Oh my god, she was that girl wasn't she?" Stacey asked.
My mind flickered to that day in the café. Cassidy hadn't worked out that I hadn't told management straight away. She was one of the only people who saw me as me straight away. We'd laughed like nothing had changed, it had felt like nothing had ever changed.
I was foolish to thing like that.
Too much had changed since we were sixteen. We had gained so much, but we had lost each other in the process.
I suddenly found the floor very interesting.
"I understand why you kept her name from us, I really do," Stacey soothed calmly.
"You could never possibly understand," I said.
My voice was weak from not being used. I sounded strained and quiet, but that was how I felt.
My world had crumbled away around me. Cassidy was gone, and I didn't know if I was ever going to see her again.
"Help us understand then Louis," Simon said.
He hadn't spoken before then, he had just watched us and Stacey.
"Explain who this Lieutenant Davis is," he whispered.
The boys looked at me expectantly. They had only heard from my mum that Cassidy had gone missing and seen the tweet. They didn't know anything else.
I didn't know where to start.
I thought about the little girl that dropped a box on the driveway on her way into her new house.
I thought about the first time we had walked into the school. My mum had dropped both of us off. She had been so shy.
I thought of how Cassidy had made friends with all the people I had. She became more confident around people, even if she occasionally slipped into Welsh by accident because that was her first language.
I thought about the first time that I had heard Cassidy sing. She had a beautiful voice, but she refused to sing on her own.
I thought about the first time I had called Cassidy my best friend.
