At 7pm, Gemma and I are sitting in Freddie's car. I am obsessed with the suit. I've never loved one more.
The car ride is spent chatting and singing along to music. I notice something off about Freddie. When we arrive, he just gives us the money to get in and for something to eat afterwards and leaves.
When we're at the door and have paid, Gemma puts her arm around me.
"Anne, welcome to a teenage disco.", she says with a smile.
We walk in, and immediately, its all a burst of disco music and the smell of alcohol, and the gross sounds of 13 year olds shifting with each other. For a 13-15 age range, it feels like stepping into Fifty Shades.
Gemma's over at a table where they're giving out red liquid. I stare at her suspiciously.
"Don't worry, it isn't anything bad, just BPM. Vodka, booze, any of that stuff isn't sold here. If anyone's drunk, they brought in their own stuff. I've never gotten drunk at one of these.", she tells me over the music. I feel instantly relaxed. Alison would be pissed if we came out wasted.
"Want one?", she asks me. I nod my head.
I smell it just in case. Gemma laughs at me. Its just BPM anyways. I drink it down and so does she. I have to admit, its kinda strange to have BPM at a disco. I didn't even know people drank it anymore.
A familiar song then comes on. I then spot a group of girls we don't know coming over to us.
"Hey, girls! You can't do this one on your own!"
The song is Come On Eileen. I smile at Gemma, who smiles back. We then go with the girls to the middle of the floor, and we all dance, Gemma stuck to my hip the whole time. Then, the bridge comes, and a cute blonde girl takes my hand, and Gemma takes another girls, and so on. And then we all do that Perks of Being a Wallflower scene, and we spin.
And I feel great. Like nothing can bring me down. Not the girls in the Fuckface Four, not Gemma's parents, not the fact that my parents will throw me out when they find out. Even with this random group of girls. Everything is perfect.
Then the song ends, and I fall into Gemma's arms laughing. The song turns into Medicine by The 1975, and I turn to the girls.
"Who are ye?", I say to the blonde girl who took my hand.
"Well, I'm Hayley, this is Kate, that's Caoimhe, Amelia, Gabrielle and Tasha. And you are?", she says.
"Anne."
"Gemma."
Hayley smiles at me, and I notice Gabrielle and Tasha are gone off dancing in a corner, slow dancing. And then they kiss.
I just look at them. They're so brave. I couldn't imagine being so comfortable being like that. Hayley follows my gaze.
"You homophobic?!", she says angrily.
I look at her. "No, of course not! I'm bi! I love how comfortable they are. When did they get together?"
Hayley softens her expression. "Sorry. I didn't know. They got together after a The 1975 concert. They met them. Lucky kids."
"That's the cutest thing ever."
I then see a girl coming over and pouring a bottle of vodka on their heads. Her friends laugh and I suddenly recognize them.
The Fuckface Four.
Gemma is talking to Amelia, but I don't hesitate in walking up to them.
"Faggots!", Bethany sneers.
"Lesbos!"
"Dykes!"
"Go kill yourselves -"
"Shut up!"
They all turn to me, including Tasha and Gabrielle.
Aoife snickers. "What you want, gaybo?"
"I want you to take your drinks, apologize to these girls and get the fuck out."
"In your dreams."
I suddenly feel a massive surge of anger. I push her and then I give her a massive slap in the face. She falls to the floor.
I look back and I see Gemma gaping at me. Gabrielle and Tasha are as well. The rest of the girls are helping her up. The song has changed to Somebody Else by The 1975.
I don't know why, but I suddenly don't wanna be here anymore. I head for the bathroom.
I look at myself in the mirror. I look angry, I look violent, I look sad. I slap water over my face.
"Anne?"
I turn around to see Gemma.
"You OK?", she asks. She steps towards me.
"I'm fine." I sigh. "Sorry I hit Aoife."
"Its OK. I thought it was pretty class. She deserved it. I hate her, to be honest. I should've left her ages ago."
I look at her more, and I notice her mouth is bleeding.
"Jesus Christ! What happened?!", I almost scream.
"Bethany's fist, my mouth. They're all pretty pissed that I have better, actual friends. Fuck 'em." She gives me the most badass look I've ever seen.
I smile at her. "Yeah, fuck 'em."
I move away from the sink and we return to the disco, and we dance the night away with our newfound friends.
Little did we know what was going to happen.
