Let's just say that we aren't going to the Jumplanes on Tuesday.
I can't wrap my head around the fact that Freddie's going to rehab. He's been using for a few weeks secretly. I only noticed something off for the past few days. I should've known really, with my dad and everything, but that was years back.
I've stayed at the hospital for the past day. I just can't leave Gemma alone right now. Their parents are nowhere to be found, so Alisons the only adult figure she has right now, and our parents are watching our baby cousin for the weekend. Which I was supposed to do. Whoops.
The drugs are out of his system, so we're going home today. The doctors said that its best that he goes as soon as possible but he has to be willing. I just really hope he agrees to go.
There's a problem with it though. My father went there and the only reason it didn't cost €16,500 was because the people he was with paid for him. Gemma and Freddie are broke. So even if he does agree, they won't have the money. I really want to help out.
Right now, I'm sitting in the waiting room listening to Queen. My phone then vibrates.
Gabrielle: Is everything OK? Was hoping we could all get hot chocolate today.
I sigh, and I text back.
We're in the middle of something. Maybe later on in the week? Thanks Gabs.
Gabrielle: OK. I understand. Hope everything goes well. :)
Thanks. :)
I shut off my phone and stick it in my pocket. I'm then distracted by Gemma coming back through the double doors and sitting beside me.
"Where's Alison?", she asks.
"She's gone into town to get food. How do you feel about KFC for your breakfast?"
She smiles at me. "Sounds perfect."
"So, how's he doing?", I ask.
"OK. He's going to rehab but the nurse told us how much it costs and now I don't know."
"My father got in because the people he was with paid for him. It cost more for him because he's an adult. Freddie probably has the kiddies price but that's still-"
"€8,000."
"Exactly."
We both sigh. Then, a woman in a white coat comes out through the double doors. Gemma immediately stands up.
"What's wrong?", she asks desperately.
"Nothing. You all should be going home soon. Can you just come in with us a second?"
Gemma looks at me. I nod at her.
"OK. See you later, Anne, save some chicken popcorn for me."
I roll my eyes. "I will. Good luck."
"Thanks."
And they walk through.
Alison comes back with the food a few minutes later, and we go outside to eat it. A few minutes later, Gemma comes out to us. She looks startled, shocked even.
I hand my box of popcorn to Alison and walk over to her.
"Gem, whats wrong?", I ask her.
"N-nothing. Its just, they're offering to pay for his treatment and recovery in Kilkenny."
I gape at her. "Really? That's great!"
"It is, but I don't know if I can accept it. Freddie's all for it but I don't know."
"Gem, this is your life and your brothers life we're talking about. Its best to accept it because the opportunity will never come again. And I know its awful to see your brother who you love so much being sent away, but its for the best, and he'll be in safe hands. And I'll be here every step of the way, whatever you guys need."
She smiles at me and hugs me.
"I'm so happy you're finally in my life, Anne O Brien.", she says softly.
I smile. "I'm happy too, Gemma Welch."
