A phone rings in the middle of the night.
At first, neither wolf reacts. Books are scattered over every inch of their bedroom floor. Spells of ancient languages face the dark room around them; some spare spells are piled in corners. The lamp's lightbulb had burnt out an hour after the two wolves had fallen asleep.
They are curled against each other on the floor, pillows under their heads. A blanket is pulled up to their heads, and two open grimoires are on their laps.
As the phone continues to ring, the male Alpha groans, adjusting himself under his wife. She just moans and turns on her side. But the ringing continues.
Finally, the female Alpha cracks open an eyelid. Rolling her neck, she crawls out from under the blanket—she hears her husband whine at the loss of contact—and towards her charging phone near the wall. She reaches forward and presses the green answer button before dragging the phone to her ear. "Hello?" She rasps, careful of her husband's sleep.
"I need you."
The panic in her brother's voice makes Lexi sit up on her elbows. "Nik?" She asks, glancing at the clock. "It's one am. What's happened?"
"Alexis, please."
Lexi's eyes fly wide open. "Is she dead? Did she die?" She kicks her foot out, hitting Derek's leg. He just slaps at her limb. "Is Hope alive?"
"For now."
Lexi roughly gets to her feet, grabbing a robe and wrapping it around her body. She kicks Derek again, this time at his side. With a snort, he wakes. "What the hell?" He groans. When he sees the fear in her eyes, he ceases his complaints.
"Elijah, Hope, and I are going to the Salvatore School. They are equipped to handle the transformation." Klaus' voice comes out rough and broken. "Davina and Freya have nothing. Tell me you have something. Please."
Lexi glances down at the books on the ground. "Nik..."
She hears something break as Klaus curses loudly. The noise echoes in her ears as she begins to pace. "Nik, you have to calm down," she orders. "What's your plan?"
He hesitates before he responds. "I-I can't tell you much. Just that I need to get to Mystic Falls. And while I execute it, I need someone to look after Hope, make sure she doesn't exert herself—"
"Nik." She stops him cold. "What do you need from me?"
Within seconds of the ended phone call, Derek is packing a bag as Lexi runs down the hall to the two bedrooms. Using magic, she opens the first door. Seeing her son in bed sleeping so peacefully, some of her panic lessens. She kneels down beside him, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Theodore," she breathes as she shoves his arm.
He bolts up in bed, his eyes flashing yellow. When he sees his mother, the alarm changes into terror. "Tell me she's not dead," he says.
Lexi shakes her head. "We're going to Mystic Falls for the full moon. Pack a bag. We'll only be there a day or two." He nods as he slips out of bed.
Lexi moves down the hallway, gently opening Stella's door. Her heart cracks when she sees the broken picture of Stella and Carter in her daughter's hand. BaStellailey sleeps with her eyebrows furrowed and her lip quivering. Tissues filled with tears litter the bed.
Lexi carefully settles next to Stella, running her hand down Stella's back. The witch relaxes under her mother's touch. Only when her frown disappears does Lexi wake her.
