"Up!"

Outside, the whole first year of Hogwarts was repeating the word 'up'. Every child had their hand stick out, shouting at a stick in order to make it fly. You'd never felt so stupid.

You looked around at everyone else. Tiana looked very focused as she shouted the word 'up' with as much force as she could. Still, she got no where. The rest of the Hufflepuffs were trying hard too, but they weren't annoyed at how much time it was taken. You noticed that Tadashi wasn't even trying. In fact, he seemed much more interested in something on his wrist.

You looked towards the other houses. All the Ravenclaws were growing impatient. Their 'up's were growing increasingly angry each second. You saw that Rapunzel kept assuring everyone that they'd get it next time. But her optimism was only met with a scowl. Yet, she didn't quit trying to cheer everything. You respected her determination.

Down with the Gryffindor, they all said 'up' in different tones, each time louder than the last. Each Gryffindor had a look of excitement on their face. You searched for your friends amongst them and then found them. Where Merida jumped up each time she said up, hiccup in turn barely mumbled the word with his hand held out limply. You snorted at his lack of effort.

You turned towards the Slytherin and your jaw dropped. Jack had the broom in his hand already and didn't seem to even care. Most people didn't notice but Madame Hooch did.

"Congratulations Jack" she said "You pulled that off with ease"

Jack just shrugged and grumbled how it's 'no big deal'. Elsa then proceeded to nudge him and he hastily thanked Madame Hooch for the congratulations.

Suddenly a commotion came from the Gryffindor group. You whipped your head around and couldn't contain your laughter when you saw what happened. Hiccup was standing wide eyed in shock. He rubbed his forehead with one hand and held his broom with the other. Apparently his weak 'up' had made the broom soar up and hit him in the face.

Hiccup looked around, embarrassed. He gave an annoyed smile.

"Aren't you good at this Hiccup" Mulan said with a snigger.

Hiccup just sighed and swung his head to face her. "Yep" he said. "I'm just the best flyer around" his voice was practically dripping with sarcasm.

The other Gryffindors laughed. Mulan opened her mouth to say something but Jack shouted from across the field.

"Hey haddock" he shouted "seeing as we're the best flyers out of well" jack gestured to everyone around him. "Why don't have a race" he walked towards hiccup and held out his hands.

You could see hiccup debating whether to accept or not but then he placed his hand in jack's and shook it.

"Deal"

--------------------------------------------------

Madame Hooch hadn't protested against the race so she allowed them to continue. As long as there was no foul play, she was curious to see how this would turn out.

Jack mounted his broom and hiccup went to do the same. You walked over to hiccup.

"Good luck" you told him

He smiled at you arrogantly "oh it's not me who'll need it"

"Who knew you could be so cocky" you scoffed. Hiccup just laughed at you as you strode towards jack.

"Hiccup told me that you needed luck more than him so good luck" you said to jack with chuckle.

He raised his eyebrows at you and grinned. "well I accept your luck" he said.

You moved to the side as the two boys got ready to go. Madame Hooch stood at the front and relayed the rules. And then, they were off.

The two darted into the air. They were both unbelievably quick and nimble. Jack looked like he'd been flying his whole life, which he probably had. Hiccup however, well you could tell from the joy on his face that it was his first time flying.

The wind ruffled their hair as they zoomed close to each other. They swerved past corners and shot upwards then downwards. It was hard to tell who'd win. Hiccup was much quicker but Jack was far swifter. Where hiccup seemed to be in the lead on the straight paths, jack always overtook him in the turns.

They leaned close to their sticks and held on tightly. Determination marked them both. They drew nearer to the finish line. Madame Hooch watched in astonishment. Her mouth hung open as they flew overhead. The two boys tilted their broomstick downward. The angle at which they fell was so steep that you thought they would fall off. But neither let that happen. They hugged their broom sticks tighter.

The two got closer to the finish line and to each other. They drew closer and closer and closer until -

They both reached the finish together. Quite literally tangled up in one another's limbs. They'd spent too much time looking forwards than to the side and crashed into each other. The boys quickly untangled themselves and stood up.

They were both very disheveled. Jack had a warm glow to his cheeks and quickly returned his white hair to its usual messy style. He dusted off his jacket and straightened his tie. Hiccup on the other hand was bright red in the face. His shirt was covered with mud and his hair was a complete mess.

You stifled a laugh as you watched him try to clean himself up a bit. He wiped his shirt thoroughly and his hair shook with him. It was surprisingly thick and the sun made the brown of his hair look almost golden. You admitted to yourself that you found it quite nice seeing it look like that. Cute in a way.

You heard meridas loud laugh to your right as the two boys continued to stand there awkwardly.

Jack coughed and patted hiccups shoulder. "Um, good race," he said.

"Yeah you too I think" hiccup said with a raise in his eyebrows.

"Well I for one am quite impressed boys" Madame Hooch spoke up. "in fact, I think it's best you both try for the quidditch team"

Jack's jaw dropped to the ground. He suddenly grew very excited. People next to you also started whispering excitedly. Hiccups expression however, mirrored your own. He looked completely dazed.

"Um" he began "what's quidditch?"

A burst of laughter came from some as Madame Hooch patted hiccups back. She directed the two boys to her office and promised hiccup that by the end of the day he'd know everything about quidditch.
