Chapter 27: What happened to us

After I had woken up, I started to get ready. I was finally allowed to go back to the compound. I got all ready to go and headed downstairs. I met my mom in the entrance way.

"You ready to go?" she asks

"Ya." I say

"Are you sure you're ready to go back?" she asks

"Ya, I'm sure." I say

We head out and meet the driver. Once we get to the compound, I immediately rush out of the car and start to head up to the library. My mom stops me before I can get up the stairs.

"Chloe." she says

I turn around and see her walking towards me.

"Be careful. Take it easy today." she says

"I will." I say

She embraces me in a hug and I hug back. I then continue walking up the stairs. I had texted Caleb telling him that I was coming back and told him to meet me in the library. I saw him and immediately ran towards him and embraced him in a hug.

"Hey!" I say

"Hey." he replies

He smiles at me and I smile back. Just then, an Erudite man comes up to us.

"Caleb Prior?" he asks

"Yes?" Caleb questions

"Jeanine Matthews requests a meeting with you." he says

"Alright." he says

"Follow me." he says

Caleb follows the man and looks back at me giving me a confused look. I just back at him. Why would my mom request a meeting with Caleb. I decide to follow him. I don't want anything bad to happen to him. Once I reach the office, I put my ear up against the door. I hear my mom talking to Caleb.

"Mr Prior, please sit down." she says

"Am I in trouble?" he asks

"Not at all. I just wanted to discuss something with you." she says

"Alright." he says

"You've been working very hard lately." she says

"Thank you." he says

"I have chosen you to become an official scientist." she says

"Thank you Jeanine." he says

"You're welcome. You start right away. Ill walk you to the lab." she says

I hear them start walking towards the door and I quickly run away. I hide behind a pillar and watch as they leave together. I decide to follow them to the lab. I see my mother with Caleb. She hands him a new blue labcoat and she starts explaining things to him. This meant I wasn't going to be working with Caleb anymore, now that he got a different job. I walked away with my head down. I walk towards the computer lab, which wasn't close to the science lab. I just hoped this wouldn't ruin our relationship.

After working for a bit, I decided to take a little break. I headed to the cafeteria to get something to eat. As I was walking, I accidentally bumped into someone. I turned around and saw Caleb.

"Caleb." I say

"Oh hi Chloe." he says

"What's going on?" I ask

"I got reassigned." he says

"Oh really?" I say like I don't already know

"Is that what you were talking to my mom about?" I ask

"Yea. She offered me the job." he said

"Why'd you take it?" I ask him

"You think I was going to pass up an opportunity like that?" he asks

"Um... no. I was just..." I say

"I just got offered a job and all you care about is yourself and what you want." he says walking away
