Chapter 30 // Slow

Dani's POV

The next day, I decided to invite Luke over. He came over and we were watching movies, as usual in my living room. It felt just like old times and that made me content. After we finished the second movie on Netflix, Luke turned to me. I looked at him and smiled. He gave me a weak smile back. "What do you want to watch next?" I asked.

"Dani, we gotta talk.." Luke said, causing me to tense up. "It's nothing bad.. I hope. But we need to talk about us again. It's just a clarification talk sort of." He stumbled. I nodded for him to keep going. "Well, remember how yesterday I said that I still like you and I want to get back together?" I nodded again. "I still do, but we have to take it slow."

"I know, I said that yesterday too." I replied.

"Dani, I mean like super slow."

"What do you mean?" I was confused.

Luke sighed and put his hand to the bridge of his nose and started massaging it. "I mean like I like how this is going. I want us to get to know each other again since we've been apart for so long. I've missed you so much and I still love you.. But.."

"But?"

"I can't promise anything."

I sat up straighter on the couch. "What do you mean, can't promise anything?"

Luke sighed again. "I mean I can't promise anything between us will happen."

"What? Why?" Luke noticed that I was getting worked up and took my hands in his. He looked me straight in the eyes as he kissed my hands.

"I just... Want to see where this goes. I don't want to rush into anything. I just want to make sure we're both still really into each other and hopefully in the end this works out."

"You're acting like I don't like you, Luke." I chuckled a bit trying to ease the tension.

"I know you like me but you were with other guys, maybe you only like the idea of me and not actually me."

"I do like you." I cupped his face into my hands. He smiled meekly towards me. "We'll take things super slow." I pecked his lips and let go of his face after.

"Thank you." He sighed back into his position into the couch. I started scrolling through netflix to find another movie or show. "Dani?"

"Yes Luke?"

"Are you sure you still like me? Because it has been a long time since we've been together together."

I smiled at him and said, "It's funny how time seems to pass but my feelings for you don't."

He smiled back and looked happy for my reassurance.

The whole day we were hanging out, watching movies. We ended up even cooking together for ourselves and my family. When my mom arrived with Sammy, w had already set up the table for them to eat our pasta.

"Something smells yummy." My mom said.

"We cooked dinner for you guys." I replied. She smiled and hugged me. She sat down as did Sammy after greeting Luke.

"What about you guys?" My mom asked. "Did you guys make some for yourselves?"

"Yeah, we already ate." I told her. "So enjoy, bon appetit." They thanked us, as we headed upstairs to my room. We got to my room and laid on my bed. We didn't turn on the tv since we were tired of watching movies. We just laid there, comfortable with each others silence. It wasn't until I broke the silence by saying, "I might get an internship."

Luke turned quickly towards me. "Really?" I nodded.

"What?! That's amazing Dani! Where?"

"Remember when you picked me up that one time from that building?"

"Yeah."

"That job. Originally I wasn't the first pick, but I was at the top of interviewees."

"That's great Dani. I'm proud of you." Luke said, bringing me closer to him. "I have something to tell you now."

"What?"

"The main reason I want to take things super slow is because.."

"Because of what?" I asked for him to continue.

"Because I also have an internship." I looked at him, surprised.

"Really?" I jumped up to sit up. "That's awesome, Luke! Where? When do you start?"

"I start in two weeks."

"That's awesome! Where is it?"
"It's... Back in the states.." He replied. I had to stop my jaw from dropping to the floor. I slowly laid back down while Luke propped up on his elbow to look at me. I didn't make eye contact with him but I felt his gaze burning into my skin. "Dani?"

I stayed silent.

"Dani, please say something."
"Why?"

"Why what?"

"Why are you going back to the states? There's no possible way for you to stay in Australia?" I asked.

"The internship program is in the states. And it's final, I'm already going. I want to go." He replied. I stayed quiet again. "Dani, I loved the states so much and it's my big shot at getting a really good job."

"I get it." I told him, looking at him empathetically. "I'm happy for you. I really am."

"Do you understand why I want to take things slow and can't promise anything?" Luke asked. I nodded.

"But why can't you promise anything?"

"I don't want to ask you to stay loyal to me while I'm over there again. I can't ask you to do that."

"I understand." I mumbled. He kissed me gently.

"Dani I love you, and I'll be gone for maybe 2-4 months. Let's see how this works out, you can go see other guys if you'd like. When I come back, we'll pick up from wherever we left off, and we'll see where that takes us. Okay?"

"I'm not gonna see other guys, Luke."

"Yeah but you have the option to.. If you want."

"Does that mean you're going to get other girls?" I bluntly asked.

"Of course not, Dani. I don't want any other girl."

"So why can't you promise?"

"I just want to make sure you're into me and it gives me something to look forward to when I get back." He smiled a bit.

"Okay.." I reluctantly said. He kissed my forehead softly, and laid back down.

"I have an idea." He said.

"What?"
"Let's have a sleepover the day before I leave."

I smiled at his thought. "I like that idea."

Sorry it was short and if it was confusing. Basically Luke is going away again and he doesn't want to ask her to wait for him. He still loves her but wants to see if it will actually work with the distance and doesn't really want to waste her time that's why he says that she can see other guys.
