Dani's POV

4 months later

It's been working out.. Whatever Luke and I are.. We've been texting each other constantly and trying to at least call or video chat once a week. It's my favorite part of the week. We are both focusing on our careers but we're both making time for each other regardless of the distance between us.

But recently, our schedules have not correlated that great as before. We would make sure Sundays were free so we could chat and catch up with whatever happened in each others' weeks. But, Luke's internship is taking up his whole schedule and only leaves him one day to rest, which happens to be when I am working as well. Texting is not going well either. These last few weeks we have been missing each other by an hour or so. We're trying our best though and it does not seem like this will break us.. or whatever we are.

Hey when you get a chance, text/call me please?

I saw his message once I got out of the office from my internship. I shot him a quick text back.

To: Luke

Hey still want me to call?

From: Luke

Nah, not anymore. I was just panicking but I have it under control now..

Kinda..

I clicked his name and clicked the FaceTime option. On the first ring, he answered. His face, filled with confusion and panic, appeared on my screen.

"Hey are you okay?" I asked, inserting my earbuds into my ears.

"Yeah.. I'm fine... Kinda." He replied. He seemed really antsy which I knew was not a good sign.

"Luke, what happened?"

"It's just that something happened at the office."

"Oh no.. Something bad?"

"I mean not really. But sort of. But still it's like okay I guess." He stuttered.

"Luke, calm down. Start from the beginning." He took a deep breath, and ran his fingers through his hair.

"So, our boss called us, the interns, in for a meeting. We go in, not knowing what to expect. Well, I expected she was going to tell us that our internship is up and like a closing almost." I nodded for him to keep going. "Well, we all go in there and she tells us that although this is an internship and that she's happy with how all of us have been contributing to the company,  this whole time it's also been a contest of some sorts to see who is really fit for the job. She said that out of the twenty interns, she has picked five to stay in with the company."

"Five out of twenty.. Wow.." I whispered.

"So, I've been nervous this whole time, I couldn't sleep, I couldn't eat. I really need to be a part of the five, Dani."

"I mean, good that you may be considered a part of the top five but, is it the end of the world? You said that this internship is good so maybe with this under your belt other doors will open?"

"Dani, this job is the best of the best. She said she'll start us like three spots ahead of interns." He replied, causing me to get confused. He saw this and the cleared it up by saying, "It's like in journalism. There's intern, a low journalist that like edits and doesn't really get time to write on the newspaper, then there's a person that gets some writing time on the paper, then there's a person that has their own small column. I will be that person with the small column. It's not a lot but in this job and with me having little experience, it's so good."

"That's good, Luke. I really hope you get the job."

"Thank you.." He trailed off.

"Wait, so if you get the job, what will happen?"

"I guess I'll have to stay here?" He said.

"Stay in the states?"

"I think so..." He whispered. By this time, I was already in the car. I sat back in the driver's seat and sighed. "Dani? Dani? Say something please."

"What do you want me to say, Luke?" I sighed. "I can't say that you can't stay because that would be selfish of me, but I can't say that I'm fully happy for you if you do get the job because then I would be lying. Of course, I want to see you succeed but... it feels like all these months have been nothing."

"Dani.. I'm sorry.. I won't take the job if it does come down to it."

"Luke-"

"No, you said that there will be other options. I'll take those options back home."

"Luke..." I said softly, trying to speak through the lump in my throat. "I wouldn't be able to live with myself if you gave up a great opportunity for me. You're doing so good, setting a career out for yourself, and if that means that I can't be in the picture.. So be it. If you do get the job. Promise me that you'll take it."

"Da-"

"Promise me."

"I promise."

"Okay good. When do you hear back?"

"At the end of the week."

"Okay. Well, we still have some time." I smiled meekly, as did Luke.

"Listen, I have to go back to the office. Thank you for understanding. I love you. Bye." He hung up before I could reply.

"I love you too."

Sorry it was so short but I literally did not know what to write. Sorry if it sucked too. But anyway, this story is coming to an end sadly. Maybe two more chapters left. IDK depends on how I'm feeling.

Love y'all, keep reading, keep commenting, keep voting, til next time
