"Good night, honey. I'll see you tomorrow morning," you smiled as you tucked your six-year-old daughter in and you pressed a kiss to her forehead. "I love you to the moon..." you said as you waited for her to continue.
"And back," she beamed happily, clutching her stuffed Spider-Man close to her chest.
You chuckled lightly and smoothed out the bedsheet. "Alright, sleep well." You turned off her night light and rose to your feet. You stood by the door post for a few minutes to make sure she actually went to sleep and didn't pull out the book she had been completely invested in for the past nights. You'd find her asleep with the book on her face when you and your husband went to bed.
You felt two hands sneak around your back and you gladly leaned into Tom's chest. He leaned his head on your shoulder as you watched your daughter. "We made a pretty cute kid," he chimed softly.
You nodded. "Yeah, and another is baking in the oven." You ran a hand down your five-month pregnant belly. He placed his hand over your own and rubbed your skin.
"She's asleep. C'mon," you whispered, shutting the door to when it was only slightly ajar, leaving a narrow stream of light to seep into Rosie's room. Tom took you to your shared bedroom and you were faced with the heap of unfolded laundry sprawled out on your bed.
"Couldn't you have folded this after you came out of the shower?" you asked Tom and he shrugged.
"I had to reply to some emails, love. Sorry." He took an item from the pile and started to fold it.
"I have to do everything in this house," you grumbled under your breath, folding the many socks that had come out of the dryer.
Tom froze and stared at you for a good ten seconds. "That's not true. I help you out whenever I can," he protested.
"Yeah, whenever you can. You're always answering emails, rehearsing your lines, making phone calls. You only help me when it is convenient for you," you told him and put down the shirt in your hands.
"I'm sorry that I'm the working person in this house." He slightly raised his voice at you, making something inside you snap.
"You told me it was fine that I quit my job to take care of our children, Thomas, or have you forgotten that they're yours as well? Rosie takes up all my time lately and I'm exhausted from carrying a child inside of me. It would be nice to sometimes have someone around who helps me out," you told him loudly.
"You can hire someone to help you out, Y/N. I'm sure you're old enough to arrange that," he shouted back.
"I don't want someone else, I want you!" you exclaimed, throwing your hands in the air. You fought back the tears as you didn't want to show him any weakness.
"I'm a busy person and you knew that when you married me. You said you'd support me living my dream and wouldn't complain even for a second," he exclaimed.
"I know that and I don't regret saying that. I'm so freaking proud of you but sometimes I wish you would put our family first because that's what you promised me when we got married!" You couldn't hold back the tears anymore and they flowed freely down your cheeks. You sank down on the bed and held your hand over your mouth.
"Mummy?" you heard softly and your head shot up, seeing Rosie standing in the doorway with tears in her eyes.
"Rosie," you breathed, wiping the tears from your cheeks and walking over to pick her up. "Why are you not in bed?" you asked her softly, trying your hardest to keep your voice from shaking.
"I heard you and Daddy yelling at each other," she muttered softly. "Are you getting a divorce?"
That question knocked the air from your lungs and your eyes shot to Tom, who was looking at your daughter with the same amount of confusion.
"Wh-What makes you say that?" you asked, sitting down on the bed with her in your lap. Tom sat down beside you and Rosie reached out her arms to him. He gladly took her from your arms and she cuddled into his chest.
"Jenny told me that she hears her parents yelling at each other a lot and now they're getting a divorce." Her voice trembled as she spoke and you gently rubbed her back.
"Oh, honey. We're not getting a divorce. We won't ever get a divorce. The reason Mummy was yelling at Daddy was not a reason for us to get a divorce. I was just a little bit upset," you told her softly.
"We're a family, Rosie. You, me, Mummy, and the baby in Mummy's belly. Nothing can take us apart," Tom said.
"But what if you do get a divorce? Will I live with Mummy or Daddy? I don't want to choose." You had never heard such fear in your daughter's voice and it broke your heart. You wiped a stray tear from your cheek and cleared your throat to speak, but Tom beat you to it.
"I love your Mummy very very very much and nothing can ever make me want to get a divorce. You, your Mummy, and your unborn sibling are the most important things in my life. We won't ever make you have to choose between us because we will always be living in one house together," he said.
"Pinky swear?" Rosie asked timidly.
You held up your pinky and so did Tom. Rosie hooked her pinky through both of yours and shook it. "We're a family, Rose. And we love each other very much. We fight sometimes, but at the end of the day, we always make it up," you told her.
"You haven't made up yet," she said softly.
"And you're completely right." You nodded before turning to face Tom. "Tom, I'm sorry I yelled at you. I know you work hard to support the four of us and I love you so much for that. Thank you for being here whenever you can," you told him honestly, failing to keep your voice from cracking.
Tom smiled softly, taking your hand in his own. "I'm so sorry, Y/N. I know I'm not around as much as we both want but I promise that when I'm home, I'll help you out. I know this pregnancy is hard on you and I want to take as much pressure off of you as I can. I love you and our little sprouts." He rubbed his hand over your bump and you smiled, wiping away the tears from your cheeks.
You wrapped your arms around Tom and Rosie. "I love you two," You whispered.
"I love you too, Mummy."
"Love you too, darling."
