"Mum? Can I do this one on my own?" your seven-year-old daughter, Daisy, asked you, tugging at your arm. You knelt beside her, careful not to damage your Spider-Gwen costume.
"Mr and Mrs McMillan? Of course, honey. Say hi to them for us," you replied, ruffling your daughter's hair. She grinned, reminding you of your husband's smile, before she ran down your neighbours' driveway. Her younger brother, Finn, chased after her.
Tom wrapped his arm around you. "They're getting so big," he said.
You chuckled. "Yeah, they are. I can't believe Finn was born five years ago already."
"Still feels like yesterday," Tom said, pressing a kiss to your hair. "And we still have so much time to go until they're eighteen and ready to move out."
"Move out?!" you exclaimed. "Daisy is seven, that's at least eleven years with my baby. And I truly mean at least. I don't care if she's twenty-five and still living at home."
"Love, do you think the girl will live at home until she's twenty-five? I mean, she's seven and already Trick-or-Treating on her own," he pointed out. "Plus, if she is anything like either of us, she'll have a great future ahead of her. She'll move out before we know it."
"That's true," you said with a small pout. You wrapped your arms around his middle, feeling the material of his Spider-Man costume against your skin. As surprising as it may sound, it wasn't Tom's idea to dress up as characters from the Spider-Verse. It had been Finn's. He loved watching all of the Spider-Man movies, not just his father's.
Tom was dressed up as his Peter Parker, you chose Spider-Gwen, Daisy picked Miles Morales, and Finn had chosen Spider-Man Noir. After spending over an hour in the costume store, you had found all the costumes necessary for Finn's dress-up idea, and even though you had to make Daisy's costume about two sizes smaller, the kids were ecstatic. Tom was too, for that matter.
"Mum! They gave me all their leftover sweets!" Daisy shouted excitedly as she ran up to you, holding up her Trick-or-Treating bag that was filled to the brim with every type of sweets on the planet. Finn waddled behind her, sucking on a bright green lollipop.
"That's great, love, but we're not eating all that tonight." You ran a hand over her head of curls. She pouted. "But you can have a few when we get home." This brightened her face again and she ran after her brother, who was already on his way home. Tom took your hand as you followed your kids home.
The kids changed into their pyjamas and plopped down in front of the TV, each of them holding a bowl filled with sweets. You put on the new Addams Family film for them to watch while you and Tom crawled onto the couch. You wrapped your arms around him and cuddled into his side as you watched your children laugh at the film.
By the time it ended, they had fallen vast asleep. You lifted Finn from the ground and Tom took Daisy in his arms. You took the two upstairs where you placed Finn in his bed. After tucking him in and pressing a kiss to his forehead, you turned off the lights and went to Daisy's room, but you stopped at the door as you heard her telling Tom all about the Halloween party they'd had at school yesterday. She had briefly told you about it when she had come home from school, but she was telling Tom parts she hadn't mentioned yet.
Daisy wasn't the most talkative child and while you had tried everything to get her to open up more, it wouldn't work, so to hear her talking so enthusiastically, warmed your heart.
"I think it's time for someone to go to sleep before she has a sugar crash from all those sweets," you said as you entered Daisy's room.
"But I don't wanna go to sleep yet," she said, slumping against the headboard of her bed. "Can't I stay up a little while longer?"
You chuckled. "You can stay up while Daddy reads you a bedtime story, how's that?" you suggested, sitting down on the edge of her bed. She nodded excitedly and you smiled to yourself, knowing Daisy couldn't stay awake during Tom's bedtime stories no matter how hard she tried.
And you were right, by the time Tom was halfway through the story of the Nightmare before Christmas, Daisy was snoring contently, leaning against her father. Tom smiled, putting aside the book and tucking Daisy in. You kissed her head before leaving the room with Tom behind you.
You went downstairs where you turned off all the lights to plop in front of the TV to watch one of your favourite horror films, using Tom as your shield when it got too scary. You yelped at the jumpscares more than once, scaring Tom in the process.
When the movie was coming to a close, there was one more jumpscare, but this time, three people screamed instead of two. Faster than light, you turned off the TV and turned around, finding Daisy in the doorway of the living room, clutching her stuffed bunny to her chest. Her face was ghostly pale and tears were in her eyes as she shook with fear.
"Daisy!" you called, jumping over the back of the couch to run over to her. "Why did you come out of bed?"
"I had to pee when I heard you and Daddy screaming. I didn't mean to watch, I'm sorry." She broke out in terrified sobs.
"Oh, sweetie, it's okay. It's okay. Come here." You hugged her close to your chest. "Why don't we watch a different movie to help you think about something else?"
She nodded against your chest and you picked her up, taking her to the couch where Tom had put on her favourite Disney movie, Frozen. She sniffed and sobbed occasionally as she watched, but after a while, she calmed down and even laughed at some of the bits she already knew by heart. Tom held both of you close as his hand ran through Daisy's hair, successfully soothing her.
You ended up falling asleep on the couch, you wrapped up in Tom's arms and Daisy on your chest. Finn found you the next morning, and instead of waking you up, he joined you on the couch, snuggling into his father's side.
