Part 1/2

It's not simple to say

That most days I don't recognize me.

"Y/N, please listen to me," Tom pleaded, chasing after you. He grabbed ahold of your wrist to hold you back.

"Let go of me, Tom," you snapped, your eyes filling with tears. "Please."

"No, I can't let you keep doing this to yourself. He's not a good guy, Y/N, and you know it," he told you. He gripped your arms to force you to look at him.

You looked up, tears blurring your vision. "I can't leave him, Tom," you whispered.

"Why not? Give me one good reason why you can't leave that son of a bitch." Tom had to clench his teeth to stop himself from using worse words.

That these shoes and this apron

That place and its patrons

Have taken more than I gave them.

A sob escaped your lips and you avoided his eyes. Gently, you removed Tom's hand from your upper arms. "I have to go," you muttered, not finding the strength to speak clearer. "I'm sorry."

Tom dropped his hands to his sides as he watched you leave. He was sure he heard you holding back more sobs as you left the diner where you worked. His heart broke for his best friend who had been pushing him away for months. But he couldn't figure out why.

It's not easy to know

I'm not anything like I used to be, although it's true

I was never attention's sweet centre

I still remember that girl.

Tom had known you since both of you were small. He had seen it all. All of your ups and downs. The good, the bad and the ugly. He had been there through it all. He remembered nights on the beach of the small town where you both grew up. He remembered the time you were a vibrant, happy girl who loved to go out with him and your other friends. You loved to dance and go on adventures. You loved to laugh and joke around.

But now all you did was go to work and go home to your boyfriend of two years, Earl. The two of you had met on a night out. Tom had taken you out for drinks after you had been accepted into the college of your dreams. A guy had come up to you and you had started talking. At first, Tom had been included in the conversation, but it soon was just you and Earl.

She's imperfect, but she tries

She is good, but she lies.

In the beginning, you and Earl were a great fit. He made you laugh, he took you on dates. You had spent hours on the phone with Tom telling him all about your magical nights out with Earl. How he had taken you to an amazing restaurant with a view of the sea to celebrate your birthday. How he had surprised you with a spa day after you finished your first year of college.

But that began to fade about a year into the relationship. A few weeks after you moved in with Earl, he lost his job as a mechanic. He tried and tried, but he couldn't seem to get a new job, so you had no choice but to drop out of school to work fulltime to support the two of you.

She is hard on herself

She is broken and won't ask for help.

You started working at a local diner where you waitressed tables, washed dishes, and served pies. You didn't particularly like the job, but it paid well, and you had nice coworkers. Some days, you'd work from 6 am to 10 pm just to be able to afford groceries that week.
