My feet ached inside the Sunday church shoes my parents forced me into. I'd have to keep it to myself and simply follow along. Mother took the lead, her graceful steps were soft and unheard. Whilst father's stomps up the wooden porch resonated loudly. With parents at either side of me, I mustered up the cheeriest smile despite the pounding heart inside n'y tight chest. My grip tightened on mother's hand which earned me her attention. Her hazel nut eyes shining down on me soothes the rising tension.
The door was soon answered by a grey-haired woman. She welcomed us in and sat us in the living room. Father hoisted me up by the armpits and sat me down on his lap. Mother quickly took our side after some exchanges with the strange old lady.
Into the salutations, two other men entered the room. The first was old like the lady who had answered the door. They both had grey hair.
The second was a young boy, probably their son.
"So you must be Peter Parker," my mom practically jumper from her seat, squealing as she hugged the young stranger. "You have no idea how relieved we are by your contributions, and being neighbors just seals the whole package."
My father's arms squeezed around my sides, holding me close to his chest. I giggled at this.
"I'm Benjamin Parker, but Uncle Ben is just fine. And you," the old man looked my way. "You must be Vanessa."
As a little kid, I was always very awkward when it came to new people. But there was something about this old man that made me very happy.
As so, I reached my arms out, hoping father would let me go to him. My parent understood and helped me down his lap. I ran to grey-haired man and surely enough, he picked me up into his arms and held me in his lap.
The old man chuckled at my enthusiasm "I can sense that warrior spirit in her already."
I felt the boy sitting next to Uncle Ben watching in awe as I played with Ben's glasses. Of course as a child I didn't let it bother me.
My mom nodded. "It came to us as a shock when she was diagnosed with hemophilia. We don't know how the adoption agency could have missed that."
"Oh," the woman I would later know as Aunt May seemed surprised. "She's adopted?"
My father nodded. "We just wanna show our gratitude to the young man who's agreed to help us in our time of need. So thank you, Peter."
The latter caught himself staring and looked to my father instead. A coy smile playing on his lips as he said, "The pleasure's all mine sir."
