"I never knew you were hemophilic."

"There's a lot you don't know about me."

It was already dark when we arrived. Not wanting to derange my parents I instructed Miles to my bedroom window facing the deserted backyard. The window was unlocked allowing us to make it inside. Once my feet reached the carpeted floor I freed myself from Miles' grasp.

"Wait," I watched Miles' silhouette lean back on the window sill, his wide eyes still noticeable in the darkness of the room. "You're adopted?"

I fondled around the room before finally locating the light switch and turning it on.

"Since I was 2. And before you ask, I don't know who my real parents are, nor do I care to find out."

"Okay, okay," he put his hands up declaring defeat. "So you and Spider-Man-?"

"Peter was my neighbor, but also my blood donor for some years until my state improved and I had no use for it."

The young boy hooked his fingers around the hem of his mask and pulled it up over his face. The sweat beads collecting on his forehead glistened underneath the artificial lights. Even without the mask his eyes were the size of saucer of plates.

His focus seemed more on my belongings rather than our conversation. "So, what else is there to know about you?"

"Curiosity killed the cat," I said with confident strides towards him. "Besides, you haven't told me much about your story."

Before he could react I closed the distance between us two. I planted a hand on his shoulder. The sudden contact forced his attention to be on me. His figure tensed and trembled underneath my touch while his hot breath came out shaky and uncoordinated. Was I perhaps too forward with him?

With my free hand, I pinched the edge of his mask and pulled it back down his face. "Hey," I mimicked as I shoved him out the window.

Miles took it like a pro and latched onto the outside wall of my house.

"H-Hey!"

Holding back a laugh, I called out after him "I'll see you at school, Kid Arachnid!"

Encounters like these soon became of common occurrence. Though we've been enrolled in Brooklyn Vision Academy for roughly the same period of time, our friendship had never reached such heights. I took a liking to his presence and our conversations, more so than expected.

Something like this couldn't be avoided. Miles and I, though barely even friends, are both part of something greater than us. Miles was fairly new to this, and I understood the load was hard on him. Listening to his stories was the least I can do to support the city's new hero.

"Liz, please tell me that math homework wasn't due today."

Without her consent I pulled up a seat at her desk and spread my arms across the tabletop. I tucked my head away in the folds of the grey hoodie I wore over my uniform.

"I mean, I did do it! Just didn't really double check my work."

"I can really use some counterarguments to the rumors, V," said Liz with a strict tone.

Her sudden directness put me on guard. Part of me wished to call her out for ever believing in school rumors. The reality reminded me of my position.

"Liz, you know how boring it gets here. Anyone is willing to spread lies just for a bit of excitement." Her glare told me her mind was made. My words would not convince her, but she was my friend. "I have nothing to do with this new Spider-Man copycat."

"Yeah, well," she slapped my arms off her desk and began by shoving away her things into her worn bag. "Friends tell each other stuff like their neighbor being the city's masked superhero."

Liz then stood from her seat just as the bell rang. Her dead eyes stared down at me and I actually felt a knot form in my stomach.

"You didn't."

Author's Note: Sorry I haven't been posting in a while! It's been hectic these couple days. This chapter was a bit of a bore so hopefully I'll publish the next chapter soon (it's way more interesting than this one). Thank you for sticking around and as always your comments are more than welcome! I love getting feedback. Good reading!
