Chapter 19.

The next morning I had anticipated the worst. The complete silence of an empty house.

I was happily disappointed.

The moment my eyes opened I was greeted with the heavenly sight of a snoring teenage boy nestled
in the sheets besides me. He was still dressed in costume, his face partially covered by the mask except for his lush lips and nose. Truly...

"Adorable."

I caught myself mumbling out those words but fortunately it was hardly enough to wake him.

I slipped out from under the sheets and stretched my throbbing legs over the side of the bed until feeling the floor below me. Slowly leaning my full weight onto my feet, I heard a rustle from behind.

It was Miles. With his mask askew over his face, the boy didn't know where to look. He shook his head up and down, left to right, and in every other direction. "Hmm! Wha-! Who's there! What's going on!"

I reached out and grabbed his hands. "Calm down, I'm right here."

My voice calmed him enough to allow me to slip the mask off. I was immediately greeted by a warm gaze from his mocha brown eyes.

"Did you sleep well," he asked.

I nodded my head. "Thanks to you."

His pinkish cheeks flashed brightly under the heated sunlight filtering through the blinders. "Uh, I, I didn't want to leave you alone that's all. You know, in, in case... uh in case ...um-!"

"I get it. Thank you" I squeezed his hand in mine before letting go. "They know who I am, and that makes me a liability."

Miles was running every possible situation in that head of his, only to come to the same conclusion. "You're not safe here."

A cold moment of silence washed over us.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

I played dummy. "Tell you what?"

That irked him off. We both knew what this was about. And I'd be lying if I wasn't expecting it to happen.

Like a scuba diver about to dive deep into the unknown waters, I took in a sharp breath.
