I didn’t get much sleep that night. To many thoughts were spinning through my head and the darkness felt more suffocating that usual. By the time the lights had flashed on I had been sitting in the dark for what felt like ten years. Alina didn’t get up that morning when I did. Instead she sat on her bunk, talking quietly to no one with a solemn look on her face. I had shrugged her off and hovered by the bars until they screeched open, clanging loudly as they stopped in sync. Unlike most mornings the pace of the prison was a slower and tense. Not to say the atmosphere wasn’t usually tense but it was different. Today people took their times to get to the ground floor, the lack of appetites and sleep obvious. I spotted Christian easily, his dark hair falling in front of his face as he leaned against the railing in front of his cell, looking down at the courtyard. He was lost in thought and jumped when I stopped next to him. “Jesus Mel, you scared me…” He muttered, shaking his hand. I mumbled an apology and scanned the courtyard for familiar faces.
“What happened last night?” I asked, finally looking over at Christian. His face hardened.
“Remember the thing Rowan told us about when we first arrived? The Blood Watch?” I nodded, my blood running cold at the thought. “I’m guessing it was that…” He went silent after that, looking around the yard. My eyes landed on Lilith, Chances cellmate. She was sitting at one of the back tables and appeared to be crying, one of the few girls in this prison comforting her. I frowned, glancing around the prison.
“Have you seen Chance this morning?” I asked, frowning. Christian shook his head and looked up. I noticed movement out of the corner of me eye and Christian half smiled at the whoever was walking up. I turned and Gray and Carter nodded to me. Gray looked sickly pale and appeared to have gotten no sleep. He leaned on the bars and placed his head in his hands, Carter standing next to him.
“I hate this place.” He groaned. “What the fuck even happened last night?”
“It’s called the Blood Watch.” Christian explained, tugging on our arms to get us to follow him down stairs. “The Wheezers, the creatures that you saw that were wearing gaskmasks, come out and choose six or so inmates. Then they take them are they’re never seen again or so we’ve been told.” Our footsteps became muffled as we stepped onto the concrete ground floor. Christian nodded towards the other Skulls when Kevin and Bodie looked towards us. Christian’s face had hardened into an emotionless mask as soon as we started walking, glaring at anyone who looked at us twice. Owen and Tyler stepped slightly to the side as we approached, allowing us to enter the group. Jake was talking quietly to Kevin about what happened the night before. Kevin nodded occasionally but didn’t seem to be paying much attention. His eyes flicked around the large room, landing suspiciously on each guard. He raised a hand at Tyler and he became silent.
“Do you remember the Anthony? He was part of the Skulls a while ago before he was arrested, taken here to be exact. Had a large black crow tattoo on the side of his neck?” I raised an eyebrow but Bodie and Jake nodded, obviously knowing who he was talking about. Kevin kept his eyes locked on one of the guards and nodded at him. “Wait till he looks towards the elevators…” We stared at Kevin questioningly but looked over at the Blacksuit hovering near one of the walls. His silver eyes watched the courtyard, a rifle balanced in his large hands. His eyes left the middle of the courtyard as someone yelled and he snapped his head towards the sound. The black collar of his suit ended at the base of his neck leaving the rest of his neck visible. As distorted and twisted as it was, an obvious black crow covered the side of his neck reaching up towards his jaw. My heart dropped at the sight and Christian tensed next to me. The Blacksuit lowered his gun slightly and stalked off towards the quarrel, inmates fleeing from his path and staring at him in fear. Bodie cursed under his breath, watching him.
