Off To A Bad Start

Running up stairs to the room you now shared with Bucky you grab your twin daggers that Thor had given you. You put on the back holster and tighten the straps around each shoulder, once its secure you place each dagger in its sheath on your back. The grip of each blade slightly poking up enough for you to grab each one with ease.

Heading down to the jet your the last to arrive,

"About time" Tony jokes as you stride onto the jet.

"Everyone take a seat, wheels up in 60 seconds" Nat tells anyone from the cockpit.

After getting into the air she engages stealth mode.

"Lets go over the plan one more time" Steve starts.
"Nat and Buck head out first, scout the area see if theres any security around. Tony stay in the air, guide Nat and Bucky to the guards on the ground. Once you've given us the all clear, (y/n) you take Agent Summers close to the container and use your powers to listen in on their plans, hear what they have and what they plan to do. Then we will engage, I will wait on your signal."

"Is everyone good with the plan?" Steve says with a slight sternness in his voice.

"Yes Cap" you reply, others responding with "Yeah" "Ok".

You walk out of the jet with everyone, waiting for Tony, Bucky and Nat to scout the area and take down the guards outside. They worked quickly together as this was their forte. Watching Bucky work makes the butterflies burst in your stomach, you liked to see the serious side of him, to know he would protect you in any circumstance.

Agent Summers stood next to you "Wow their good. They must of worked together a lot to be that in sync with each other"
You couldn't stop to think about her comment, you were focused on the mission.

You hear Nat and Bucky communicate with each other,
"All clear my side, Nat you good?" you hear Bucky ask.

"All clear"

"Tony any more?" Nat asks.

"(y/n) and Summers are clear to head towards the main container, there are two guards on the outside"

You sneak up to where Bucky and Nat were stood your backs pressed against a container.

"I don't think i need to get any closer guys let me try from here" you whisper into the teams minds.

You concentrate your mind to your target.
"Ugh its fucking cold out here, they better make this quick" you hear one of the guards outside the containers complain.

"This better be worth the pay" you hear the other.

No matter how hard you tired you couldn't hear anything inside the container.

"I cant hear anything other than those two guards outside" you say confused, I'm going to get closer.

Bucky looks at you concerned, "Let me and Nat go first"

You nod your head in agreement, you watch as Bucky and Nat head between two containers towards the other two guards. You hear a noise to your left, you whip your head around in its direction.

"Porter, you there? Porter come in?!" you hear the man whisper frantically into a talkie.

"Shit" you run after the man that you had heard, you needed to stop him from raising the alarm and alerting anyone else. Sprinting after the man you gain on him as you hear Agent Summers talking to the rest of the group.

"(y/n) has left her position" she tells everyone trying to follow you.

"What, where is she" you hear Bucky.

"In pursuit of a straggler" you pant.

Tony looks around from the skies for your position.

"Who are you chasing?" Tony mutters to himself.

Ignoring Tony's comment you hear the man again "Porter they took the decoy, get out of here!"

"GUYS! Your following a dead lead its a decoy" you push into everyone's minds.

"Tony where is (y/n)?" Steve chips in.

While Tony is guiding everyone to your position, you see the man take a sharp right around a corner. Turning the corner yourself you skid to a halt you had been led to an empty patch of land.

"Wait? What?" you say super confused looking around for any signs of the man.

Steve was the first to reach you "Where is he?"

You look around as Summers and Tony land next to you.

"He should be here"

Nat and Bucky reach you last as they were furthest away, Bucky straps his rifle to his back and walks up to you as your looking around the empty space, still looking for they guy you know you had seen.

"He was here i swear" you plead with Bucky who was looking at you concerned.
"He was on a talkie, to a guy named Porter, he told him to get out before we found them" you say frantically trying to piece together what had just happened.

Just then everybody turns their attention to the explosion that erupted behind them.

"Is that coming from the container?" Steve looks up at Tony as he takes to the skies to get a better view.

"Sure is Cap"

Steve turns to you with a look you had never seen before.
"THIS was the decoy!" he shouts before he runs off in the direction of the explosion. Nat follows him into action, Agent Summers looks at you before heading off with the rest of them. You knew this would be the kind of thing she would have to report back to Fury.

Bucky stayed with you as you talked to yourself in disbelief.
"HE WAS RIGHT HERE!" you shout frustrated.

Bucky walks up to you and holds your both of your forearms with his hands to stop you from moving.
"Hey, Doll, look at me" he says in a calming voice.

You do as he asks and stare up into his kind, soft eyes.

"Your exhausted, maybe it was your mind playing tricks on you?" he suggests.

You had no words for him you just broke down in tears maybe you were tired, maybe your mind was playing tricks on you, maybe it was the stone? You didn't know and that was the worst part.

"Guys, everything is destroyed, they got away" Nat talks to you and Bucky through coms.

"Fuck" you whisper. Bucky pulls you in to a tight hug, one arm around your shoulders and one hand holding your head to his chest as you sobbed. He kisses the top of your head
"Lets head back".

He pulls out of the embrace and leads you towards the jet. You dried your eyes before you saw the rest of the team on the jet. You knew you had fucked up, majorly and you had no explanation as to why.

The first half of the flight home was silent until Steve couldn't take it anymore.

"What was that back there?" he asks you "The first lead we have had in 2 months and we have nothing to show for it"

"I'm sorry Steve, i don't know what happened"

You had never seen Steve so angry and frustrated, you had let him down and the team, it made you feel sick.

After what feels like an eternity Nat lands the jet and everyone starts to pile out. Tony stops and places a hand on your shoulder making you look at his face. You saw that same sympathetic look he had given you when you had stumbled down to his workshop with a bottle in your hand.

You gave him a weak smile in return and headed out following Bucky whilst staring at the ground disappointed in yourself.
