Nick

I heard Blanda & Joe whispering, about me as I stared at the TV. I know they were worried about me & I know Blanda wanted me to snap out of my depression, but that wasn't easy. At first I just didn't give a shit about my health, thinking if I ended up in the hospital, it would make Demi forgive me. As the hours went by, it got harder to realize what I was doing wasn't healthy & wasn't smart.

I wasn't even sure what day it was, when I heard Demi say my name. I had been sitting on the couch, thinking about her, actually, then I looked up when I heard her voice & I swear she never looked more beautiful. I sat up, quickly, my eyes wide. "Demi.... How are you?"

"I'm fine. Better than you, apparently." She rolled her eyes, then looked at me with a bit of repulsion. "What are you doing to yourself, Nick?" She waved her hand in my direction as her eyes scanned up & down my body.

"Nothing. I was just watching some TV."

"And not taking care of yourself. You were hoping if you ended up in the hospital, I would come running & all would be forgiven, weren't you?"

I looked down, shamefully. "No..."

"So, you're still going to lie to me?"

I lifted my gaze again. "I'm sorry. I just didn't feel like doing anything."

"Well, your kids have been trying to call you or facetime with you, so now you've got them worried & it's all for nothing, because I won't forgive you just because you end up in the hospital."

I winced, then cleared my throat. "I will call them."

"First you need to get your shit together. Get the fuck off that couch, go check your sugar, get something in your stomach besides alcohol..." She spoke as I stood up, then she stepped back. "And get a shower & brush your teeth so we can have a much needed conversation." She turned her nose down, in disgust.

I nodded my head, "Okay... I will."

"I will be in the backyard. Come find me, when you look like you give a shit about yourself again." Demi walked off toward the sliding glass door. I saw Blanda was out there, with a couple of iced teas for them to drink & when I saw Demi smile, I got my hopes up. Maybe she would forgive me & we would work through this.

First things first, I had to check my sugar, so I did that & saw that it was on the low side. I was surprised it wasn't lower, honestly. Joe hadn't bought any more beer for me & I had my pump, so that was the reason it wasn't as bad as it could have been. If I really wanted to end up in the hospital, I could have taken my pump off.

After I ate something, I checked my sugar again & it was within the normal range, so I headed upstairs to take a shower & brush my teeth. I got dressed, then looked at myself in the mirror, actually feeling human again. I didn't like the guy I saw, but at least he looked better than the one I saw when I first walked into the bathroom.
