Henry Philip "Hank" McCoy was born in Undee, Illinois, by his mother Edna and father Norton McCoy. His father worked at a nuclear power plant, but before Henry was born his father was exposed to a large amount of nuclear radiation, believed to be the cause of Henry's mutation.
Hank was born with strong arms and legs, unusually large hands and feet, and a vast intellect. His mutation manifested before puberty, which is not uncommon. His features were close to those of a gorilla, leaving his nickname in school to be "Magilla Gorilla".
As his mutation progresses, he gains the attention of the students in his school around him. The curiosity of the students leads him to seek refuge elsewhere, which is when he meets Professor Xavier, encouraging him to join his school.
Beast then accepts the invitation, noticing that the school is a place for sanctuary and knowledge. He is then accepted into the X-men, where his powers further progress into what he is today.
Beast leaves the X-men to become a scientific researcher, provoking his curiosity towards mutation and genetics, but soon after joins the X-men again, believing his knowledge could help them.
