A few minutes later were Clementine, AJ and Louis covered in walker blood. It smelled horrid, and Louis kept complaining about how hard it is to get rid of the stains.
Then the sound of a pack of walkers started becoming louder and louder in the distance. Those wobbly footsteps and that hissing noise that chilled you to the core. To think that all of them had once been regular people, with normal, every-day lives.
"Be careful." You whispered to all of them as they prepared themselves. Clementine ran into the pack, completely unafraid, and AJ and Louis followed behind. You felt your heart wrenching as Louis got further and furter away from you, headed into that dangerous place. Would this be the last time you saw him?
"Walkers!" A scream echoed from the boat. A huge spotlight was directed to the herd and gunshots started raining down at them.
Clementine instructed the others to use the walkers as a cover and slowly make it forward. You begged that they wouldn't be spotted. Please, let this plan work.
"Are you ready?" Ruby came up next to you.
"Not really, but let's go anyway." You said, voice a bit shaky.
While the raiders were distracted by all the walkers, you and Ruby ran across the path and you grabbed one of the torches that had been lighting up the makeshift stable.
"You go and free the horses." You instructed her. "I'll make the place a bit lighter."
She ran and hurriedly untied the horses from the trees while you went up to a pile of hay and threw the torch right onto it. It caught fire easily, and the flames almost hit you. You had to back away since it got so hot from the large fire. The horses panicked, sensing the heat, and immediately and ran away in different directions.
"Damn it! The horses!" You heard an angry shout from the boat. It was Lilly. Her voice made you squirm. Never had you ever met a woman as cruel as her. You wondered what could cause a person to become so soulless.
You and Ruby sprinted off into the woods immediately after your deed had been notice, to avoid being seen. You had your knives ready in case you needed to defend yourselves.
"If we can, we should get one of the horses and take it back to the school." Ruby said as you jogged. You knew that Ruby loved horses, and it wouldn't hurt to have one. As long as you could feed it, it would most likely be quite useful.
"Yeah, we can do that." You answered. "Or at least try."
You found a good hiding spot behind a fallen tree and squatted down behind it. You could see a raider frantically trying to put out the fire with a bucket of water. It took a while before he succeeded, but when he did he took off towards the boat again.
As you sat there, on the sticks and the moss, back propped towards the tree trunk, you couldn't help but think of Louis again. What was he doing right now? Was he okay?
You shook tour head hard, as if it could somehow make the pictures of him get out of your brain. You couldn't let it distract you.
The familiar sound of a walker approaching caught your attention. It was probably a stray since all the others were drawn towards the shore.
You told Ruby you could handle it. With a knife in your hand you ran up to the walker and put the blade right between it's eyes. Doing that made you feel a bit better. It permitted your anger to surface, and it raised your focus.
It seemed like there was no end to the sound gunshots, and the loud noise would only attract more walkers. The raiders certainly had a load of ammunition.
"(Y/n), look." Ruby whispered and pointed to your left. A pack of multiple walkers had heard you and were now heading in your direction.
"Shit." You cursed under your breath as the two of you prepared for what was to come.
"Let's do this." You said and took a fighter's stance.
Then you sprinted quietly towards the walkers, kicked them in the shins and lastly sunk the knife into their skulls. No matter how many times you did that would it always feel gross.
Teamwork made it a lot easier to take out walkers, and it also felt more safe knowing that someone had your back.
"There!" Ruby exclaimed in a low voice when all the walkers had been dealt with. At the edge of the woods stood one of the horses. A black stallion. It looked majestic in the moonlight.
"We should go get it." You told her and she nodded. You crouched down as you ran towards it to avoid being seen, but made sure to not scare the horse away.
The walkers were still pouring in towards the boat, it seemed like there was no end to them.
"I can get it. I'm used to horses." Ruby said and carefully approached the it.
No raiders were outside anymore, all of them seemed to be inside the boat now. You hoped that Louis was somewhere safe.
"Look, there's a cart." You said and walked up to it. "Should we take it?"
"Okay, we can put it on the horse." Ruby agreed. "We can use it to get everyone back to the school. It'll be faster that way."
Something felt off. You listened closely and to your surprise had the gunshots stopped now. What was going on?
Then quick footsteps came towards you, and out from a bush jumped Willy. You had gotten prepared to attack, bit quickly stood down as the familiar boy came into view.
"Hey there." You whispered to him. "Glad to see you're safe."
"You too."
"Where's everyone else?" You asked him. He'd had a clearer view of what was happening than you and Ruby had had.
"I saw Aasim and Omar, they're somewhere on the shore." He said. "I'm not so sure about the others."
Then a loud voice was heard from the boat's top deck.
"Do it AJ!" Clementine.
A single gunshot was heard, then followed by multiple more.
It was calm for a moment. For a while it seemed like things had actually settled. Then the boat slightly shook. Knowing what was about to happen you braced yourself and covered your ears.
Then it came. An explosion loud enough for everyone in a ten mile radius to hear it.
The plan had worked.
"I knew it!" You heard Willy say under his breath as he made a small victory gesture. "Mitch's Masterpiece didn't disappoint."
You could see a fire raging through the windows of the boat, and smoke started filling the air around it. It started to slowly lean to the side, since it presumably was taking in water. It wouldn't be many minutes before it capsized.
Now you just hoped that everyone would make it out in time.
