Swaying back and forth on the creaky, plank like seat of the families Wagon I stared ahead. I stared over the large head of Guss, our aged Clydesdale. He wondered forward, drawing the Wagon over the rough cut dirt road that lead to uncles farm.
Passing the dead oak that hung over the road, marking his property line I smiled. The day, etching itself to be dreadful was going to be well worth it when I give my home made bread and cheese to Uncle Thomas. Oh how he swooned for my hand made goodies.
I hurried ol' Guss into a slow canter, egging the Wagon closer to his cabin. I spied his dusty ranch as we came around the bend curving the road, peaking from the wheat field. We, me and ol' Guss, pulled through his gate that read 'Raspberry Farm' on the dilapidated wood. It was oddly quiet. By now Aunt Luise and Jerry Wayne, my cousin would be out to greet me but it was silent. Nothing but ol' Guss' trumpeting could be heard.
I climbed down from the wagon, making sure not to catch my dress on the clingy wood. I pulled down the basket of goodies behind me and walked towards the front porch. I smiled at the thought of his smiling, dirty old face when he saw the fresh cutlets of cheese and bread loaf. I hopped up on the porch but still, the air rang silent. I looked by the barn to be sure I hadn't missed them, but there sat the teal painted wagon, an idea of Aunt Luise. It was her way of feeling a bit fancy, being a farmers wife and all.
I knocked on the door a few times but it creaked open. It drew my attention. It wasn't unusual for the door not to be latched but I take it to be the silence of it all to chill my spine. I stared at the crack for a moment before pushing the door open. Light filtered into the musky old house. I took a step in but instead of the soft thud of wood, I heard a wet tap. I swallowed my breath and looked down to see my dark maroon reflection in the floor.
My heart, all I could feel was my heart pounding by my ear. I quickly stepped inside to see Aunt Luise on the floor. Tears filed my eyes as the scene burned into my eyes.
Her hair, let out of her bonnet and her head turned unnaturally far. I collapsed next to her, turning her over. Her chest was open. It was empty of anything. Nothing was left, like she'd been eaten from the inside out. I couldn't catch my breath, I gasped for the oxygen I knew I was already getting. Her grotesque remains made bile rise in my throat. I couldn't hold it down and I wretched until my stomach hurt. There was so much blood. I stood up after a moment and looked around.
Who had done this? We're they here? I looked around, fear driving rather than my heart. I ran to the bedroom and tripped once my eye caught the sight. I collapsed at the the end of the the bed In a horrid scream. There laid Uncle Thomas.
There were pieces everywhere. It looked like he had swallowed a bomb before it went off. There was hardly anything left of his chest. His limbs were ascue on the the bed and floor.
Tears ran down my eyes. My cheeks hurt from squeezing them shut so tight. This had to be a dream. This couldn't be happening. I held my breath before I stood up, my ankles willing to give out on me at any given moment. I backed out of the room and put my back against the wall across from the room. My mind was in a haze. I couldn't think. Only one thing came to mind. Run.
That I did. I ran out of the house, splashing more wet blood onto my dress as I scrambled through the front door. I clawed for guss' reins, trying to turn him as quickly as I could.
I froze in my tracks when my mind crossed Jerry Wayne. Where was he? He wasn't in on the house. I looked up to the barn and I felt it. He was in there. I knew it. I slowly walked to the barn doors, pushing open the Walkman door.
He was alive! He stood In the center of the barn. He looked at me as soon as he saw the the door open. I saw his eyes grow wide and he ran to me.
"Anna! Maw and paw!" His eyes filled with tears as he grabbed at my dress and hick uped into sobs. I began to cry hysterically along with him but I picked him up and ran to the wagon.
I turned Guss around and I whipped him, making him dash like mad. I put my arm around Jerry Wayne and sniffled. "Its alright. You're ok now." I slapped the reins to keep Guss moving and stared at the road. "What happened?" I asked, shock finally settling in. I got no answer but I was still staring forward. "Jerry Wayne..." We came around the corner and something large and pale caught my eye. It was stuck to the large oak at the edge of my uncles property. I squinted as we came closer. "Jerry Wayne?" My eyes grew wide as I realized that the pale white object was Jerry Wayne's body. A scream boiled in my throat when when I heard it behind me. I could hear it breathing heavier as it ripped through the fake flesh of my cousin. Tears were all that came from me before teeth clamped down on my neck.
"Please god... save me."
