It's here.

Solar.

It’s a Thursday afternoon, while the sun is nice and bright, and I’m over my friend Billy’s house right now. We got popcorn; a few liters of soda; a bunch of extra snacks; a few girls- whose names are Jenny and Sarah; a huge flat screen television, and a hell of a night to come.

My name is Dara. I graduated last year from my freshman year of College. My dream was to become a History teacher. I wanted to teach Ancient History, with all ancient cultures and whatnot, but as of now, it’s the least of my issues.

Billy and I have been friends since we met in 6th grade. We were both new students to the school, coming from complete opposite ends of the U.S. - he came from California and I came from Maine. Financial issues on both our halves too, so we had a bit in common to end up in the same school on the same exact day. It was a major Coincidence that we never really thought much about.

I had just met Jenny and Sarah that night. Billy told me he’d have a little bit of a surprise for me to come, and surely enough, there was one hell of a surprise. Yea, the girls were nice. Got both their numbers within 15 minutes and we drank a bit- even though we are underage. My friend (shockingly) just so happened to pull out a bag of drugs after and from them, till a few hours later, it is all blurry to me.

But I’m not going to beat around the problem at hand. I hate to break it to you, but things are not okay right now. They haven’t been for a while, and honestly, I don’t think they ever will be again.

I’m sitting in the basement of my parents’ house, which is 83 years old and about to break into pieces. I have 3 locks on the door, a few weapons, myself, and the little food I found in my house. Something really horrible is about to happen and I can’t decipher between if it was even real or not. It’s so close to fantasy… or a nightmare that I can’t wake up from. Nobody has left their houses in hours and I ended up back here with no memory of getting here.

So… what is it that happened that is so drastic, and so bad? What is it that is unexplainable and terrifying? Something you don’t see on a daily basis. Something that doesn’t appear in many science fiction horror movies.

Well, the reason why we were so hyped up and ready to have a party, was because it was the annual solar eclipse party we throw about twice a year. We always get together- being Billy and myself- and have a celebration. He’s always been interested in astronomy, and so have I, but ancient history was the path I chose for teaching. We loved to look into the millions of stars and think about all planets and their moons. So when a solar eclipse occurs, it is always a cool thing to us. This year however, he threw the drugs and girls into the situation, but none of that really matters anymore.

They’re all dead.

We were having an astounding time, and we aren’t the only ones who party on a time like this. The small town we live in throws a party in itself for it. For whoever participates, after they invite some friends out/over, they all walk down to a nearby beach, and from there, we have a HUGE bonfire that goes up to around the average height of a two-story house. It sits in the middle of the place, while we all have a gathering and eventually lay down on blankets and we watch it all unfold. On a rare occasion, a total solar eclipse will happen, which gets everybody hyped up and excited.

It’s unfortunate because most years, you can’t even see it happen. It’s a one in ten chance you will actually see it happen, but from where I live, it’s been seen more times than anywhere else I know of.

Well this year, that’s exactly what happened. I, Billy, Sarah, and Jenny, all walked down to the beach a little bit earlier than usual so we could get a nice spot. We brought all our snacks and drinks down with us, and got ourselves into a circle and eventually played “spin the bottle”. I ended up having to kiss both the girls- twice, actually. The Mayor of the town is in charge of these events yearly, and this year, she brought in a couple bands to play. There was an old fashioned rock band there, who covered a few songs by the almighty Elvis Presley. It got everybody in the whole place amped up and happy. After them, came a more new-aged band of teenagers trying to make it big.
