He used to tell me
that eyes are the windows to the soul
and when he looked at me
he told me he saw a sunny day
Last year when I saw him again
his brow furrowed
and he asked me why it was
that he saw a cloudy day
Yesterday I saw him
and I was afraid to look him in the eyes
because I knew what he'd see
when he looked through my windows
I know he'll see
that all daylight has gone
night has fallen
and the glass is shattered
on the windows to my soul
