"Mother says he'll come back."

"What do you think?"

"I think... she's lying. He would have come back by now."

"If he was able to. You know what they do to people at the border. If he tried to escape..."

"Maybe that's it. Maybe he just gave up. Maybe he didn't want to come back."

"Of course he did. He loved you, Y/N."

"He never would have left if he did."

"Should he have stayed then? Watch your mom, you, and Jungkook starve to death? If I was him, I might have left to find a better world for you, too."

"Then will you leave too, Namjoon...?"

"...If it meant keeping you alive? I'd walk to the edge of the world."

Training intensified.

Hoseok was relentless from sunrise to midnight, drilling you and the others with combatives and endurance exercises. You collapsed at least once a day, sometimes twice. The cuts in your arms ached as your skin stretched during training, but it was nothing compared to the heavy weight of your muscles.

"Get up," Hoseok said, staring down at you.

The others waited.

You got to your knees, then pressed your hands into the ground. You tried to put your weight into your feet and stand straight, but halfway to standing position, your knees gave out again. You dropped forward. Hoseok caught you in his arms, sighing through his nose. The men around you snickered.

Hoseok's hands came to your waist. He pulled you in, pressing your body against his. You stiffened.

"What are you doing?" you asked.

He didn't answer. He only pressed in closer, crowding your space. You stepped back, but he grabbed your hands and held them out on your sides. Not taking his eyes off yours, he slowly released them, and they dropped beside you. He then stepped back, leaving you in a fully standing position. The adrenaline from his body against yours kept your blood circulating enough to stay standing. It frustrated you enough to keep you on your feet.

The twitch of his mouth indicated that he knew it.

"There's something I want you all to remember," Hoseok said, stepping away and addressing the other dozen men in training. "If one of you fails, you all fail. If one of you succeeds, you all succeed. There are no individuals here. Do you understand?"

"Yes, Master," the men said in unison.

"As long as you keep my commands, you will continue to succeed. As a group. I don't acknowledge proud recruits."

"Yes, Master," the men said again.

You didn't speak. Your eyes were stinging.

Hoseok turned to you, a flicker of pity tracing the creases around his eyes. You hated that look as much as you hated his commands.

"I want you to go to the medic," Hoseok said to you.

You gritted your teeth and shook your head.

"It's a command, Y/N."

"I can still train."

"I decide whether you train or not."

He tapped the back of your knee with his foot. Too weak to withhold even a gentle tap, you fell to the ground again, coughing as you sucked dirt down your throat.
