My stomach was twisting. How many years had it been since I stepped on this soil?

The scent of lavender and dust flooded my senses, bringing up memories I had long forgotten. But nothing here was as I remembered. The desolation was more than I even imagined, the fields bare and the river dry. The smell of the lavender fields in the distance was the only indication that I was in the right place.

Guilt squeezed my gut.

"Captain?"

I shook my thoughts out, turning back to my men. "Stand down," I said. "I'll be doing this arrest personally."

My men didn't question it, even though they should have. I never made an arrest myself. I always let my men do it, only showing my power when it was absolutely necessary. If they saw my power too often, they'd find the weakness in it.

But this... this arrest was personal.

I knocked.

"Who is it?"

I swallowed at the sound of a soft voice I hadn't heard in so long.

The door inched open, a pair of deep, beautiful eyes greeting me.

Y/N.

I hadn't stood this close to her in five years. And it took everything in me not to wrap my arms around her and tell her how much I missed her.

She looked at me - blank, like a stranger - and when she glanced at my robes, I could see familiarity rush through her mind.

"...Namjoon?" she asked in a whisper.

That voice...

Someone cleared their throat behind me, and I remembered my new reputation. If I didn't keep my role as Captain Kim, all the torture I endured for years would be a waste.

"Where is he?" I asked.

"Who?" she asked, still dazed.

I stepped forward, standing as tall as I could even though everything in me was shattering. This home was just as I remembered - as if time had preserved it to torture me for leaving. The only difference was that there was no warmth in this place anymore. It was the same, yet somehow, a skeleton of what it once was.

Or maybe I was describing myself.

"Namjoon?" Y/N asked again.

She looked over her shoulder at the men who followed me in. They looked at her like a pack of wolves in heat. Even with their fill of the emperor's hostesses, they assumed they could take without asking.

But this time, they had to answer to me.

I sent them a warning glance. They took my signal and stayed at their posts. Y/N stepped towards me.

"Jeon Jungkook. Where is he?" I asked before she could speak.

She clenched her jaw the way she always did when she was scared and angry at the same time. I had to keep myself from smiling at the familiarity.

"Why are you here for him?" she asked boldly. "You have no right to be here."

I tried to shoot her a warning glance.

Don't give my men excuse to hurt you, Y/N.

"He's under arrest," I replied. "For the murder of --"

I swiveled my head to the sound of footsteps behind us.

"What's all the noise--"

Jungkook stepped into the room. Hot blood exploded in my veins when I saw his nonchalant expression. His eyes shot open when he saw me. He made a break for the door, but I lunged and hit him so hard in the jaw that he went to the floor instead. My men picked him up off the ground, dragging him towards the door as his head spun.
