January 3rd, 2020
My heart pounded as my finger hovered over my moms name in my phone. I'd been starring at my phone for five minutes now but I just can't bring myself to click dial. I know that this phone call is going to change everything I know about my life and I don't know if I am prepared for that or not.
I finally took a deep breath and pressed the call button and out the phone on speaker, pulling my blanket tighter around my body for comfort.
"Hey babydoll, how's everything." My mom said, answering the phone. I didn't say anything, I sat there staring at my phone. "Haley, are you there?" She asked.
"Yeah." That's all I could say.
"Everything alright?" She asked.
"Yes...No. I don't know." I said grabbing at my hair.
"Do you need to talk about it? Did Grayson do something?"
"No. Everything with Grayson is fine." I sighed.
"Then what's up?"
"Umm.." I said, picking at the fuzz on my blanket.
"Are you pregnant?"
"What? No. Why is the first thing people ask me?"
"Well you're not giving me much to work with here pumpkin."
"Give me a second...I'm getting there." I said, almost yelling before remembering who I was talking to. "I heard something Christmas morning, and I don't know if heard it correctly or not but I'm really hoping that I did hear it wrong but I have a strong feeling that I know I heard what I head and that scares me."The line was silent. For a while. I looked down at my phone to make sure the line didn't die and the little timer at the top was still going.
"What did you hear?" She asked after a while.
"That you and daddy are getting divorced." I said, finally forcing myself to say the words out loud. I didn't use those words specifically when I was talking to Ally, I veered around them and it physically pained me to actually say them out loud.
"Did you hear the reason why?" She asked, not even denying that what I heard was true.
"So it's true?" I asked, my voice breaking. "You're getting divorced?"
"This isn't the kind of conversation I wanted to have with you over the phone, but I guess you already know, so it doesn't matter." She said sighing. "Yes, your father and I are getting a divorce. There's not hard feelings or anything between us. The love just wasn't there anymore."
"Why didn't you just tell me when I was home?" I asked, more hurt by the fact that they didn't tell me than the fact that they were getting a divorce.
"We both decided that wasn't something the should be discussed on Christmas."
"Yeah I get that. But that was nearly two weeks ago mom. You didn't think to call me and tell me something was up? When were you guys going to tell me?"
"We were going to tell you the next time you came home to visit."
"How long has this been on the table?" I asked, wiping my face with my sleeve.
"Since August."
"That was five months ago ma! You had plenty of time to tell me, why didn't you?" I yelled. I threw my blanket off and got out of the bed, pacing back and forth.
"Because you're we're getting ready to start your second semester and we just didn't want to stress you out and then every time we thought it would be a good time to tell you, you always had something happening, so we just kept putting it off."
"So you've just been pretending to be together for nearly half of year? Do you guys even live together anymore?"
"Honey, calm down please. We were just trying to do what was best for you.
"By pretending? By lying to my face? For FIVE MONTHS? How is that what you thought would be best for me? I'm an adult, I could have taken it if you would have just told me."
"Sweetheart I'm sorry, please just calm down."
"I can't talk to you right now." I said reaching over to my bed and grabbing my phone.
"Haley, Wait-" And I hung up the phone.
