Chapter 26

Everything went for the better pagkatapos ng camping na iyon. They went home together. And for the past week, hindi sila nagaaway.

They were like a happy couple. Kakain sila ng breakfast ng sabay at didiretsong office si Atticus pagkatapos. And today was a Friday kaya nangako si Atticus na ilalabas siya nito tonight.

Tanghali na. Magisa lang siya sa condo ng tumawag ang kaibigan niyang si Ashley.

"So ano ng balita? Nananahimik ka the past days, ah. Mukhang busy ka at nalimutan mo na ako! May lalaki ka no!" sumbat nito sa kanya on the other line.

Celine just laughed. She was eating her lunch on the kitchen bar. "Ano ka ba? Naging busy lang kasi sunod sunod ang mga company events na kinailangan kong puntahan."

"Company events? Akala ko ba ayaw mong ma-involve diyan. Ano na nangyari ngayon?"

Natameme siya sa tanong ng kaibigan.

"May I remind you, Celine Catriona, that our requirements for Paris are due soon! Tapos ka na ba? At iyong registration fee?"

"I'm working on it," she said, halfheartedly. Now that Atticus is with her, parang naguguluhan siya ngayon kung gusto pa niyang umalis ng Pilipinas.

"Great! Baka kasi naguguluhan ka ngayon na nandito na yung kuya mo," Ashley said.

Nagi-guilty siya. Hindi pa rin niya naiipagtapat sa best friend ang totoong relasyon nila. "Ashley, I have something to say."

"What? Kinakabahan ako sayo, Celine, ha!"

She breathed deeply at ibinaba ang kutsara sa plato niya. "Atticus and I are not really siblings."

"I know. He's your stepbrother."

"Ashley, he's my ex."

"What the fuck!"

"And we might be... lovers again now," pag-amin niya.

"Holy mother of all fuckeries! Totoo ba ang mga naririnig ko? You dirty girl!!!" kantyaw nito. "Kaya naman pala single ka ng mahabang panahon eh may pagnanasa ka pala diyan sa kuya mo!"

"You make it sound so gross, Ashley." This best friend of her is really something!

At bigla itong natawa sa kabilang linya. "But whatever makes you happy, Celine. You know I support you. You never played around or dated anyone kaya alam kong seryoso ka sa kuya mo."

"Eww! Ano ba! Stop calling him my kuya."

Ashley laughed even more. "So when you guys do it, do you call him Kuya?"

"Ashley!" saway niya rito. If she was in front of her baka nabato na niya ang kaibigan. And all of a sudden, her doorbell rang. "Atticus is here. I'll catch you later!"

She ended the call and rushed to the front door to open it. Why is he early?

But she was in for the biggest shock of her life ng makita niyang si Amelia ang iniluwa ng pinto.

"Hello, hija," bati nito with her fake smile. She looks regal as always with her designer bag and heels.

Ashley tried to keep a calm demeanor. "What are you doing here?"

"Nothing. I was just in the area and I thought I would pay you a visit." Tuloy-tuloy itong pumasok sa condo niya, looking around. Then, when she was in the grand sala, hinarap siya ng babae. "Just a few more days and you'll be turning twenty-one."

"Yes," sagot niya.

"And you'll be out of my son's life, right? Dahil hindi mo kukunin ang shares na ipinamana sa iyo ni Leo."

Nilapitan niya si Amelia and looked at her in the eye. "Your son told me he loves me. And I might just change my mind and not leave the country anymore."

Doon nagsimulang tumawa si Amelia. It was a sarcastic laugh. "I just wanna say na mag-empake ka na ng mga gamit mo. You might not be living here anymore."

"What? What did you say?" tanong niya.

"Later, papalayasin ka na ulit ng anak ko from his house and his life. That's for sure!"

"W-what?"

"Nagmamaang-maangan ka pa. We both know you slept with Amaro's son, Dimitri,

after meeting him in the company party," anunsyo nito.

"Wala akong alam sa ibinibintang mo. So now, kung wala kang matinong sasabihin, leave!" she ordered.

"You don't have to push me away. I was just being a kind friend warning you. Anytime now, my son will throw you out of this place." Iyon lamang at tinalikuran na siya nito, walking away.

Kinabahan siya sa mga sinabi at ibinintang nito. Ano na naman kayang binabalak ng matandang huklubang ito?

She quickly closed the door and dialled Atticus. But her calls were sent directly to voice mail. Why isn't he answering?

Nagpa-panic na siya for the past thirty minutes dahil hindi pa rin sumasagot si Atticus when the front door opened at pumasok doon ang binata.

He was fuming mad based sa anyo nito.

"Atticus," she greeted him when he dumped his briefcase on one of the long couches. "I- I was calling you-"

"Did you sleep with Dimitri?" tanong nito bigla, his eyes searching hers. "Tell me!" sigaw nito.

Shock was registered on her face. Can this be Amelia's doing? "No! I did not! Who told you? Amelia?"

"No, I just happen to receive an anonymous message containing a photo."

Nagulat siya sa sinabi nito. "What photo? There are no photos because I didn't sleep with him. Maniwala ka," she pleaded. Nilapitan niya ang binata and hugged him. "Please believe me... Atticus, you know me. Hindi ko kayang gawin iyon."

"You did it before. What makes you any different now?" sagot nito.

Natigilan siya sa sinabi ni Atticus so she moved back. "G-ganon ba talaga ang tingin mo sakin? Papaniwalaan mo ba ang ibang tao kesa sakin?" And tears spilled from her eyes. "I was with you the whole week you were here. I'm locked up here with bodyguards. Paano ako makakaalis?"

His eyes narrowed into slits, as if he was assessing her.

"Your mom came awhile ago!" she said.

"My mom?" gulat na tanong nito.

"Yes! Sinabi niya sakin na papalayasin mo raw ako because you knew I slept with someone else! Can't you see? Siya ang nagsend ng message sayo. And I didn't do anything! She's trying to break us apart!" sigaw niya rito. "I thought you love me. If you really love me, you'll believe me and not anyone else!"

Sa sinabi niya ay parang lalong nagalit si Atticus. Tinalikuran siya ng binata and walked out of the condo. And she was left to crying all by herself.
