One minute, everyone including you fade away from existence, the next, you're back as if nothing happened. As if you took a long nap and woke up to everything suddenly being alright. Well, somewhat. The aftermath of whatever happened left buildings burned, houses destroyed, aircraft carriers in the hundreds either at the bottom of the ocean or destroyed in cities or the middle of nowhere. The remnants of cars line the streets, some of them crashed head on into the other. It was obvious. Whatever did this left all this destruction for you and everyone else to clean up after.
The sun feels bright, you blink your eyes to adjust to them and see that you're sitting at your desk in your home. Just where you were before everything that happened. The laptop in front of you was long dead, the battery life drained entirely when you first disappeared. You find the charger and plug the laptop in, waiting for a moment as it booted itself up. The date on your laptop read April 28th, 2023. The last you remember it was the 10th... Then it hit you. 5 years and 18 days. 5 years and 18 days had passed with you dead and now you were back. Why? You got up from your desk and ran out of your apartment, passing disoriented residents who were also recovering from... whatever it was. You looked around frantically, looking for at least some sign of the Avengers that you always saw on the news. When you caught a glimpse of red and gold streaking through the sky, you followed it with your powers to the new Avengers facility. Also known as where you worked.
Patting the keycard in your pocket, you entered the facility to see your "boss", Director Nick Fury speaking to a woman in blue and red, you stormed up to him and demanded what the hell happened.
"Look, I just woke up from a long nap too," Fury replied, your anger quickly going away. "Why don't you go ask the Avengers and our guests? You're training to be one, be friendly." He didn't seem to be in the mood to talk to anyone else and you sighed quietly before walking to the hallway towards the flight bay. They always seemed to meet up in there for some reason. You pushed the doors open and walked past those who were conversing to see a familiar face. Thor. After all, you knew him as a child in Asgard before running away and living on Earth. You stopped in your tracks as your eye caught on the black haired man in blue, his yellow cape sporting down his back. Loki.
"Ah, (y/n)! Good to see you," Thor exclaimed, he walked over and gave you a hug which you reciprocated, relieved that he was ok.
"Um, nice haircut," you replied.
"Thanks, I'm beginning to like it," Thor chuckled. Your eye caught on Loki who now took notice of you and approached you with caution.
"(y/n)?" Loki asked.
"Long time, no see, Loki," you replied. "I'm surprised you remembered me."
"There was something familiar about you when you walked in, and, well. I can see you've grown into a handsome man," Loki said softly, your heart skipping at the last part. His heart begged him to say the next few words, "Why did you leave me?"
"You're wondering why I left, huh," you said, Loki quickly snapping his gaze towards you with a hurt look. Even now you managed to know what Loki wanted. "Come on, let's go somewhere more private." You nodded towards Thor and you walked off towards an empty room to where Loki followed. After the door shut, you sat down, back against the wall and patted a spot beside you for Loki to sit. He did, watching you intently to tell him why you left all those years ago, why you abandoned him, his only friend. "I... discovered something when I was a child. Something that I was so afraid to tell anyone and that I was so certain that I'd get killed for it that I just. Found a way out of Asgard and here on Earth." The air around you went cold as ice began to spread on the ground. Blue spread throughout your body as you thought about it more and more and you let out a breath you were holding.
"You found out you were a Frost Giant."
"Yeah. I don't even know who my parents are or how I managed to get into Asgard of all places. It just... bothered me because even then my adoptive parents died and I feel they knew everything of why I am like... this." You looked ahead of you, refusing to look Loki in the eye. You couldn't look at him after what you did, nor with how you looked right now.
"(y/n), look at me," Loki said softly. You looked up at him bleakly before sitting up straighter and looking at him more clearly. His eyes were a dazzling ruby, the ice blue on his skin vibrant and contrasting against his eye colour. "You're not alone." He gave a weak smile as he placed his hand upon yours before squeezing it.
"When did you find out?" you asked.
"The night of Thor's failed coronation," Loki said. You quirked a brow at him and he cleared his throat. "I may have had something to do with it," he added quickly. You gave a small chuckle and leaned towards Loki, resting your head on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry I left you, when I saw you in New York I wanted to see you so badly, but something wasn't right. You weren't yourself. If I approached you then I think you would have been... rightfully, but incredibly angry with me, like I would have faced your wrath," you breathed. Loki shifted and pulled you up to your feet. "What-"
"Just let me show you my memories, I can't- I can't explain everything and I feel... this is the best way to do it," Loki explained. You fell quiet and nodded as he placed both of his hands on the sides of your head. He closed his eyes and you followed suit, a flood of memories from what happened after you left up until today. Once he let go, you stepped back, the feeling of cold tears running down your cheeks as you took a sharp breath in. He let out a shaky breath and looked up towards you, shoulders slumped and eyes filled with tears.
"Loki, I'm so sorry, I-" you cut yourself off. Instead of saying anything else, you pulled him into a tight embrace, to which he accepted immediately. "I never should have left you," you breathed as you let him go.
"You would have been imprisoned," Loki said, "I don't want to see my only friend be jailed for being a frost giant." His hands were resting on your shoulders, a look of sympathy in his eyes. Loki had changed so much since you last saw him. He was forgiving and calmer. The anger that you saw in him as a child and when he was last on Earth seemed to have died off. As you realised that, your face heated up, the blue quickly going away and you ducked out of his hold and set some distance between you.
"Sorry, I, um. Didn't wanna make you uncomfortable," you lied.
"Right, sorry," Loki replied awkwardly, clearing his throat. An awkward silence fell between the two of you and you tried to change the subject.
"Are you staying on Earth? Since, from your memories, Asgard no longer exists," you asked.
"You could say that, yes, depends on whether or not the people of this planet trust me after what happened in New York..." Loki replied. "Until then I'm assuming I'm going to be kept under close watch."
"Well, if that does happen..." you gave him a mischievous smile which he understood immediately. "I can keep an eye on you." You winked at him and he scoffed, a smile growing on his face as he looked away.
"I'd like that."
