Part One: Loss
Whimpering. I could hear someone whimper, then struggle against something, then a hiccup. What was going on? I couldn't see anything. The air felt humid and I could feel the sweat going down my forehead. There were no noises, just silent sobs, subsiding with time.
'Don't..' hiccup- 'Open your eyes,' whispered someone. Suddenly something surged within me, and I sat up with a jolt, only to fall back down on the..bed? My eyes flew open. The room was dimly lit, so my sight could only go as far as hardly, a metre beyond me.
'HELP!' I screamed.
'Shhh!' Someone hushed.
'Who are you?'
'Don't you remember?' she whispered back.
'Remember what..' I frowned. Did something happen? Why was I strapped to this bed?
'You,' she coughed, 'you tried to escape,'
'Escape..' I whispered to myself. Suddenly, everything came back to me. The climbing up the window, the gunshot, his threats, then I jumped. I was supposed to survive!
'You didn't jump, he shot you..again, and..' She hesitated for awhile.
'And?' I pushed.
'Your leg,'
All of a sudden, it hit me. The moment I'd woken up, I haven't felt my left side. My chest ached, and my muscles relaxed, giving way to the tears I'd been holding. In time, my sobs turned into hiccups, and I felt like I couldn't take the pain any longer. I'd lost tears but I still had pain, how would I release it?
'You have to calm down,'
'Calm down?' I snapped.
'CALM DOWN!?' I pulled at my ropes as it cut away at my bare skin, but it didn't let me loose.
'HE TOOK AWAY MY LEG! WHAT DID I EVER DO TO HIM? THIS IS HOW HE REPAYS ME FOR ALL THE FUCKING YEARS I'D BEEN WITH THAT PSYCHO?' My voice broke.
'Is this how he repays me for trusting him?' I hiccuped.
'Jenna,' she paused, 'look, sweety, he's not a stable person okay? He's senile, he doesn't know what he's doing at times and acts on impulse...trust, love, friendship.. all those things, don't matter to such people.' she was right. But were all those years really worth nothing? I closed my eyes and tried to breathe evenly, rationalizing my thoughts.
'I think, he's coming!' she freaked out. I kept my eyes closed, trying to keep my breaths even.
The door creaked, and I heard that very familiar sound of boots against tile, I dreaded that sound now, more than anything.
The bed dipped and I felt a sharp pain pricking at my right leg.
'Open your eyes,' he said, calmly. My eyes opened to see him in sweats and jeans, holding something in his hand, smiling warmly at me. My insides shivered whenever he smiled so calmly, as if everything was what it was supposed to be.
'How are you feeling?' he asked, emotionless.
'How do you think I should be feeling? Oh yeah, that's right, I can't be feeling bad cause I can't actually feel my legs at all,'
'You noticed,' he lifted the duvet from my legs and examined the right one.
'Guess,' he frowned,
'You don't need this anymore,' He got out a saw from his shopping bag and a scream escaped from my lips. No, he wasn't gonna do it. I struggled against my ropes ferociously, clawing at the ropes to let myself lose. He closed the distance between the saw and my leg and this sent me straight on survival mode. I needed to do something, quick.
'Jason, jason sweety?' my voice came out high-pitched due to the adrenaline rushing through my veins. He looked towards me, the saw still at the same place.
'Don't do this jace, please jace, I'll-' he brought it closer, 'I didn't mean to do it-' closer, 'i was just scared,' closer, it was only an inch away now.
'I LOVE YOU JASON PLEASE DON'T DO THIS TO ME!' I squeezed my eyes shut and started shaking vigorously, waiting for the pain to come.
Two minutes passed and nothing happened. I waited, my beats raising, palms sweating. I waited for him to separate my leg from my body. I waited.
But nothing happened.
I opened my eyes an inch, and was surprised to see him staring at me intently, an inch away from my face, his breath fanning my face. He came closer and pressed his lips against mine, my eyes widening in shock. However, I let it be. If this meant, I could stay alive, then i could let it be. I wasn't wrong in allowing this to happen. I wasn't. He deepened the kiss, and tried to go further, but I gave his chest a gentle push, and he knew this was his signal.
'I love you, too,' I sighed, letting all the tension lose, but not quite.
'However,' I looked at him, questionably.
'She can no longer live,'
He raised his hand, the gun positioned on her forehead, and with a face devoid of expressions, shot her.
What was I supposed to feel about that?
