Chapter 13
MY SENTIMENTAL REACTION TO THE VOICE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LINE SHOCKS ME FROZEN. How dare she do this?
“I came back for you…” she tells me, what the hell is she doing in any contact with my girlfriend?
Skailar hasn’t answered yet; she’s in shock, not blinking, her breathing is a tremble, rocking in my ears.
“Come now, Skailar, why don’t you share with me your relationship status? Dylan would be so happy if he knew––”
I snatch the phone away from her when she whimpers, on for cry at her words.
“Is this your idea of a sick joke?” I snap furiously into the phone.
“Oh, Felix, why can’t I just have a little bit of fun? Why must you ruin it for me?”
“I told you to stay away from her. I swear to god, if you––”
“She’s in my way. She’s a problem that I need to fix. And for me to fix it, I need you to move out of my way.” Her words sicken me, and frighten me at the same time.
“What the hell do you mean by that?”
“I have things to do, Felix. Things to take care of.”
I look back at Skailar, who is in tears, her face white, eyes red while the sun reflects off the sticky tear marks on her cheeks.
“…I don’t care what it is you have to do, you stay the hell away from my girlfriend. Leave her out of it––!”
“How can any of us possibly leave her out of it, when she’s in the middle of it all?” This isn’t working. Me chastising her will not get either of us anywhere.
“…just tell me what I have to do. I’ll do what you need me to do, but you will not come anywhere near her.” I state a deal that I have no idea how to get out of. What did I just say?
“I’m touched, Felix. Really, I am. But that is not an option. Skailar––”
“Don’t you dare say her name!” I snap.
“…is part of this life now. And you’re in fault for that.” She continues as if I hadn’t interrupted her.
“But just to give you both a heads-up; if I were her, I’d watch my back…because I’ll most likely be breaking it.” the call ends. It just ends, and I know what she’s going to do.
She’s done it before. She may go on a killing spree, or she’ll spend the rest of her years hunting down and killing my girlfriend for whatever excuse she thinks she may have.
I don’t waste time to walk back up to Skai, taking her quivering face in my hands. Her tearful eyes meet mine.
“We need to leave––”
“What did that mean? How does it know about Dylan?!” she interrupts me, still wailing.
I catch how she used the word it and I have no concept at all of how I am going to handle this. “How does it know everything?! Why does it keep calling me?!” she sobs.
She’s absolutely terrified, and who knows where Tyler is with Skai’s sister.
I know she’s going to carry on like this, I know her that well so I reach in her to kiss her surprised, quivering lips.
The whimpering becomes a faded echo, until it is completely still and I secure my arms around her so she has absolutely no choice but to look me in the eyes.
