The next morning, I woke up and Remington called Emerson to tell him my address so he'd know where to go before I left. I got ready as usual, and fixed something simple for Rem to eat while we waited for Emerson to get here. I was planning to make a spare key in case he needed something while I was still gone but only for a short amount of time. I decided to think about it later and had just given Remington his breakfast when I heard someone knocking on the door. I walked towards it and opened it, and I never felt so happy seeing a friendly face. He had the cutest grin on his face as he waved hi in the doorway. "Hi, Emerson! You have no idea how much this means to me. I owe you big time." He shrugged and stepped inside, "Don't worry about it, Carina. You're one of my friends and you've helped revive my brother. There's nothing more you could do to owe any debt to us." I felt much happiness in my heart, I couldn't help but hug Emerson right there. He was frozen for a second, then hugged me back tight. I pulled away and then Em asked, "So, where's the poor soul?" I pointed in the direction of the spare room.
We walked to the room and when Remington looked up from eating his food and saw Emerson standing in front of him, his eyes lit up and he had a silly grin on his face. "EMERSON!", Rem said with his mouth full, making me and Em laugh out when some food fell out of his mouth. "Classy, Leith", I joked, "Real classy." He laughed too, and then I told Emerson what to do and what to give him every so often so his wounds are mostly recovered by the end of the week and he'll be able to move normally again. "Well, that's a lot to remember, but I'll do my best", he said when I was finished. "Don't worry", I assured him, "I left instructions on the refrigerator in case you forget." He grinned and then I made my way out and said bye and good luck before walking out the door.
When I got back to school, I saw Delilah again and she said she was surprised to see me here after what's going on. "Well", I told her when she was confused, "I'm getting help from his younger brother, Emerson Barrett." She raised her brows in surprise and responded, "Well, I'm surprised. You're not afraid of them, are you?" "Well, Emerson never seemed like the violent or cruel type to me and he must care about his brothers more than anything." She nodded and smiled, "Yeah, you might have a point there. Hey", she got my attention, "I'm sorry about what I said about Remington and any of them before what he did for you. I obviously misjudged him." I was speechless for a second, then shook my head, "No, Del. Don't beat yourself up about it. You're not the only one who misjudged them. I'm still learning not to judge people by first impressions. Now I know what he's really like, and I'm still amazed he did that for me."
Delilah looked away and looked like she was hiding something. I narrowed my eyes at her. "Del...", I asked suspiciously. "Yes, Carina?", she replied still not looking at me. "Do you know something I don't know?" After a minute she finally faced me, but then I saw the clock in the cafeteria say it's five minutes until my first class of the day. "Oh, I gotta go. But...we will continue this later." She let out a breath of relief and then I headed to my Philosophy class with Mr. Watts. It was more quiet than usual since Emerson wasn't here, but he'll be back next week. I hoped everything was okay with him and Remington and as much as I hate to say it, they don't try anything stupid and steal or vandalize anything in my apartment. I'm surprised I let him in my private home. But something in my heart told me Emerson wasn't like how everyone else might see him. He seems kind and sweet and selfless, and he had a kind of aura that made you feel calm and serene whenever he was around because his soul was pure and fragile.
When I got to my music class later that day, out of nowhere I started thinking about that first day here when Remington walked in and tried to seduce me. Now it seems funny to me because I think he just wanted to mess with me, but at that moment I didn't know him so I was really harsh on him. Should I have been kinder? No, I wouldn't change how I acted at all. He needed to know somehow I wasn't easy and he was dealing with someone who knows what it's like to have their heart played and then thrown away like a toy a child only appreciates for a while. Still, some deep, small part of me wishes he stayed in this class so we could talk more and get to know each other better. Maybe we could help each other feel comfortable and less lonely in this town.
"Miss Wisteria", I heard Mr. Birch exclaim out loud breaking me out of my train of thought. "Are you quite focused today?" I looked around to see everyone looking at me, and I realized in embarrassment that he just asked me a question and I wasn't paying attention. "Um, no I'm sorry, Mr. Birch. Please excuse me. There's a lot on my mind, but I won't let it happen again." His questioning expression softened and then he said, "Alright, Miss Wisteria. I'll let this slide because you're not so troublesome, but let's just go over this again." He explained it again and I was able to answer his question, but whenever I least expected it, Remington would drift back into my mind again and I'd wonder if he's doing better now.
