As the day wore on, T'sha was getting more and more excited. Rachel was too. They couldn't stop talking about the impending visit. As soon as their school day ended, the girls went back to their quarters as fast as their legs could take them. They changed quickly from their school clothes to something more comfortable for both of them. T shirts and pajama bottoms. After they changed, they headed for the bridge. They knew that was where their father would be. Unless he was in one of the labs working on a project. Each girl took one of the handholds and shifted it as Rachel commanded it to take them to the bridge. Once there, the girls let go of the handhelds and looked out onto the massive bridge that greeted them. They smiled to Each other as they stepped out. As they walked around, the sounds and sights of the bridge filled their senses like a visual and audio buffet.
Both of them scanned the bridge with their eyes until they found their father. He was standing by the communication console with a listening device in one of his ears. He turned and looked over at his daughters as they walked over to him with curious expressions on their young faces. Spock met them half way, his hands clasped behind his back.
"We have had no word from Discovery as of yet," he told them Both with a twinge of worry seeping into his tone as he talked. He sighed heavily. "What's that in your ear, Father?" Rachel asked, pointing to the device that was sticking out of his ear as if it was trying to escape it.
"I am listening in," Spock told her evenly. At the start of his shift, they had been picking up some unusual chatter, and the communications officer couldn't make out what was being said. So Spock had put on another one and was listening in to see if he could make anything out. "What is it, though?" T'sha asked. She was just as curious as her twin.
"It is a communications device," their father told them matter of factly. He stepped aside and inclined his head towards the communications officer that was on duty at the time. They also had the same device in their ear. They looked like they were concentrating on something really hard. Then both girls watched in awe as their hands moved like lightening across their station. Spock, still listening in, quickly went over to his own station and began making his fingers dance delicately and with great accuracy over his own monitors. Both girls moved over to his station and watched as he effortlessly worked. T'sha put her chin on her father's shoulder looking at the readings on his screen. Rachel peered over her father's other shoulder as she watched. Her face becoming more and more curious. From the center chair, Number One watched with amusement on her features as she watched the small family. She had known the girls since they first came abroad with their parents. Right away, she knew that they were going to be forces of nature as they got older. And she was right. With a small smile on her face, she cleared her throat as she got out of the chair and walked over to the small family that was surrounding the science station.
"How do you girls like having your father back home with you?" She asked them as she walked over. She placed her own hands behind her back.
Both girls turned and looked at her.
"We missed him so much when he was at Starbase 5," T'sha said. At his station, Spock listened in, trying to keep his expression neutral. But on the inside, he was trying not to let his emotions get the better of him as they had threatened to so many times before. With a deep breath, he kept his focus on his screens as Rachel reached over and put her hand in his. Spock gave her a look as he shifted his attention back to the communications station. "Sir," the officer said, "I'm picking up a communications from a Starfleet ship abroaching us." Number One looked up at the officer. Then back at Spock. " Put it through, " she said calmly.
"U.S.S. Enterprise," a familiar voice boomed through the air. Both girls looked at eachother with a smile gracing their features.
"This is Commander Saru of the U.S.S. Discovery. Requesting visual," Saru's voice continuely boomed. Number One nodded and the screen flickered from the starry background to the bridge of another ship.
