"What are you still doing here?" Hunter asked with scrunched brows as he sat next to me on the bench.
The game had annoyingly went to over time and we had a couple seconds of break before going on the field for the coin toss. The coin toss would determine who got the ball first.
The rules of overtime were different than the overtime rules in regular season. The rules were whoever scored first wins the game, so being the team to get possession of the ball first was important.
"I gotta finish the game, I can't just leave y'all out there. You guys need me" I said back trying to catch my breath.
I was sweaty and extremely exhausted, the only thing carrying me through this was my determination—my determination to close out this game so I could get to the hospital.
"Celine needs you more. You know how she's gonna get if she finds out you stayed instead of going to the hospital" he said back shaking his head in disappointment
"I'll just deal with it. Labor takes time Hunter and I already talked to Coach. I have a car and police escorts ready to go once this game is over" I replied
That's what I have been telling myself this whole time to get rid of the stress of the situation.
"Yeah, but everyone is different Chris! She could be having the baby right now and you'd miss it" he said looking visibly upset "are you willing to take the chance of missing your first kid being born? Are you willing to take the chance of ruining the progress you and Celine have made?"
"I'm in a tough spot here! They tied the game Hunt and we are in overtime!" I said getting frustrated "I've worked—no we've worked our ass off to get this point. We are not going down like that. Y'all lose your best chance if I leave!"
"Chris your being real selfish right now. You need to-"
"No, I'm staying Hunter. I got a whole team counting on me, a whole coaching staff, thousands of fans! We just have to take possession of the ball first and score, then the game is over" I said back almost pleading him to understand you decision.
He stared at me for a second, before shaking his head "you better hope she has a long labor. Not every situation is going to be a have your cake and eat it too kind of circumstance"
"I'll make it in time" I said firmly "We just gotta score and I'm outta here"
"Okay Chris" Hunter said looking away from me.
I could tell he was disappointed, but he knew everything I said was true. They needed me the most right now and that's not even me being cocky.
