You heard the door open and then slam shut. Someone kicks off their shoes and drops a folder of papers on the kitchen counter.
"Hey Colbs."
He doesn't respond and flips the folder open and starts pulling some papers out.
You feel tension in the air and you know something's wrong.
You get up and cautiously walk up behind him. You put your hand on his back and he flinches slightly.
     "Hey Colby...you okay?"
He still doesn't respond. You're a little bit nervous because you can see that he's mad about something. His arms look veiny and his jaw is clenched tightly.
You wait a couple seconds before trying yet again to prompt his attention. You lightly put your hand on his arm and before you know what's happening he shoves you away, hard.
"Can you just leave me the fuck alone!?"
You get pushed into the countertop and it sends a shooting pain through your side. You're taken back by his sudden anger. He's never acted this way before. You feel tears welling up in your eyes and look at him for a second before going quickly into the bathroom.
You close the door and begin to inspect the damage. There's nothing but a small cut, which is bleeding only a little bit. You hold a wet washcloth to the wound so it doesn't make a mess. The water stings at first but then makes the cut hurt a little less.
By now, you feel a few tears starting to drop down your face, more from fear than anything else. He had never acted that way towards you, much less gone that far.
You lean against the sink and look in the mirror for a second before you hear something outside the door.
     It's him. He lightly knocks.
     "Can I come in?"
His voice sounds tired and sad.
     "Fuck you Colby."
You felt a different kind of hurt, a scared type of hurt building inside you. You don't want to talk to him.
"Please..." his voice squeaks as he says that.
     "Fuck. You."
You hear him sniffle and then slide down against the wall next to the door.
"Okay..." he whispers.
You've never heard his voice be filled with so much pain. You feel your heart breaking into pieces but you still don't know what you want to do yet.
You're crying just a tiny bit because you were kind of scared but nothing unmanageable. You put the washcloth down and look in the mirror again to fix your hair a little.
You hear another sniffle and put your nervousness aside as you walk to the door. You slowly turn the handle and it clicks open.
You push it open slowly and peek out to see Colby sitting with his back against the wall, his head in his hands as he runs his fingers through his hair. He seems sort of panicky.
Ever since you've known him, running your fingers through his hair has always been a sort of calming mechanism that you use when he's freaking out or can't sleep. It seems to help him chill out when you do it.
He looks up at you with watery eyes and tearstained cheeks.
He stands up and takes a step towards you. You back up a little bit then realize he isn't going to do anything.
"Did I... hurt you?"
You lift up the lower half of your shirt to reveal the cut. He winces at seeing it, almost like it hurt him to look at. He shakes his head.
"I didn't mean to do that, I was pissed off but not at you an-and it happened too fast for me to know what I was doing."
His voice is tearful but also pained. He looks strung out and immensely tired. There are dark circles under his eyes and his skin looks sort of pale.
"I'm so sorry."
You bite your lip, feeling bad for him. You step close to him and wrap your arms around his neck in a hug.
It takes him a second to realize that you're not mad at him before he hugs you back tightly. He carefully avoids the cut on your side.
You look up at him and give a little smile. He does the same and you kiss him.
"I really am sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you."
"It's okay baby. I can tell that you have a lot going on. I'm not mad at you."
He smiles again, and wipes his tears.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
There's a pause and he seems to be thinking about something.
"Can we watch a movie? I think I just need to relax."
You nod and he leads you out to the couch. You pick out a random movie and put it in the DVD player, then go grab a blanket. Colby's already comfy on the couch when you get back.
You lay down next to him and he puts his arm around you protectively. You rest your head on his shoulder, close to his face and he rests his chin on top of your head.
It isn't long before he falls asleep. You hear him sigh and his body relaxes a little bit. You cuddle closer and before you know it, you're passed out as well.
