You watch anxiously as the clock ticks. Every second is making you more nervous and you just wish you could leave the party. It was around 2 am, and no one had left yet.
Your brother, Brennan, had insisted you go to the party because you needed to meet new people. You spent a lot of time on your own, wandering the woods or just sitting outside, and he was starting to get worried that you might turn out to be some crazy person.
You hold your phone tightly and look around for a way out or at least somewhere that you could go outside for a minute or two. There's a sliding glass door at the back of the kitchen, so you get up and make your way through the crowd and to the door. It's easy to make yourself hidden with so many people.
Once you're outside, you instantly start to feel better. There's a slight breeze that makes the heat more comfortable. You take a deep breath and sit down on a chair on the back patio. Soon, you see a little path into the woods.
You get up and, being the curious thing you are, decide to follow it. It's a very short path and leads to a little dock with Christmas lights strung over the railing. It's pretty but more importantly, quiet and secluded.
You take another deep breath and look down at the still water below. It's rather peaceful.
After a few minutes of watching the water, you hear a stick break a few feet away from you and then someone says "Um, hello?".
The sudden presence of someone near you makes you panic for a second. In an instant, you feel yourself shift into a different form again. You duck for cover under a lawn chair on the dock.
From your hiding place, you see somebody step up onto the dock and look around for a second. You feel your heart beating fast and try to stay quiet.
After a couple seconds of looking around, the person sits on the edge of the dock, their feet hanging above the surface of the water.
You look and see that it's Colby, one of Brennen's friends. You recognize him by the smell of his cologne too.
Cautiously, you slip out from under the chair and stand behind him, your tail slowly flicking back and forth (a/n: you're a cat now lmao that's why u got a tail). You watch him intently.
You sit down and keep watching him. He looks sad and you can sense that something might be bothering him.
"What brings you out here?"
He turns around quickly, a scared look on his face. He sees you sitting there and looks into the surrounding woods for someone else.
"Hello?"
"Scared?"
His eyes widen as he looks back down at you.
"Did you just...?"
"Yeah I did."
He turns to face you, still looking scared.
"I'm talking to a fucking cat. A cat."
     "Sort of."
Now he's confused as well as terrified. He backs up a little bit.
"What do you mean SORT OF?!"
You laugh. His eyes are still wide with fear.
     "Close your eyes."
He does and you go back to human form. You stand with your arms crossed.
     "Open them."
You've never seen anyone look more concerned in your life. To be fair, however, you had never told or shown anyone else about the whole shapeshifting thing.
"But you were just... you were..."
     "Close your eyes."
He does it again and you switch back into a cat.
     "Open them."
     He opens them.
"There is no fucking way I'm seeing this. I'm hallucinating aren't I?"
You shake your head and stand up. You walk near his feet and purr just to mess with him.
He sits criss-cross and leans his elbows on his knees, watching you.
"Are you like...actually a shapeshifter? Like I'm not going crazy and seeing my best friend turn into a cat?"
     "Yep."
He looks around and then back at you. You swish your tail and sit facing him. He goes from scared to intrigued in an instant.
     "Can you be anything else?"
"Whatever I want. Name an animal."
     "A wolf."
You shrug and switch into a black wolf with amber-gold eyes. You give a little fanged smile. He seems impressed by that one.
     "A mouse?"
You switch into a little grey mouse with long whiskers. Colby puts out his hand and you sit in his palm. He holds you up close to his face to make sure he isn't seeing things.
He sets you on his knee and you look up at him.
"How long have you been able to... do this?"
"Pretty much my whole life. I found out I could when I was six."
     "Does anyone else know?"
"They wouldn't take too kindly to the fact that there's a shapeshifter living among them. People hunt and try to kill creatures like me, you know."
     "They do?"
"When they find out we exist, the first thing that comes to mind is to kill us because they're scared. Quite frankly I'm surprised that you haven't tried to yet."
     "Why would I kill you?"
"Why wouldn't you? I'm just supposed to be a figment of your imagination, not something that actually exists. No one wants to believe it but shapeshifters, pixies, kelpies, demons, we all exist. We're everywhere, you just need to know where to look and have the courage to want to do so."
You switch into your human form again and sit against the other side of the railing, across from Colby. He looks at you, confused about something.
"Do you know any demons or whatever else?"
     "Oh yeah. All of them."
"Do they want to hurt people?"
"Some of them. It depends on who you are and what you've done."
"Do you think I'd be one they want to hurt?"
You meet his eyes. He seems scared for your response.
"No. You're a different type of person. You see, there's people who believe in these sort of things, and there's people who don't or won't let themselves because they're scared. I've seen you get scared when communicating with ghosts and things like that, but you didn't turn down the offer. Instead, you wanted to. The way you act towards the supernatural world is much different than the way most people do."
He seems proud of this. You watch him.
"Although we're feared, some people still tend to seek us out. They don't want to hurt us, more of get an understanding of us and communicate. You're one of those people."
