the dark

You press tighter against Colby's side, hoping whatever you just heard downstairs was only a raccoon outside. You feel your breathing speed up a bit.
A couple minutes pass, and you watch shadows pass on the wall whenever a car drives by. It's cold in the room, and creepily quiet.
It doesn't take long before you decide to get up and go to the bathroom just to put some cool water on your face. You stop and look down the dark hallway to the left of you, expecting something to just show up out of thin air.
Ever since about a week ago, something's been off. You had a really odd and scary nightmare that included a sort of demon, or as close to one as it could get. The thing talked to you in a low but unsettlingly smooth voice and instructed you to watch out for the darkness time and time again. You jolted awake out of that one but couldn't stop thinking about what it had said to you.
You hadn't told Colby or anyone, but it was becoming concerning how paranoid you felt. You didn't feel safe at night anymore.
Once you put water on your face and dry it, you feel a little bit better. You put your hands on the counter and look into the mirror, wondering why you felt this way.
Suddenly, you hear a light knock at the door.
"Uh hello?"
"It's me, Colby. Can I come in?"
"Yeah."
He quietly opens the door and looks at you with a confused face.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"You look sort of pale."
There's a tense silence that follows as he tries to figure you out. Normally you never got out of bed until morning unless you were sick.
He walks in behind you and wraps his arms around your waist lightly.
"Something's bothering you."
"A little. I'm okay."
"No you're not. This is the third night in a row you got up at 1 in the morning. Talk to me baby."
You sigh.
"A few days ago I had a nightmare and there was some demon-looking thing telling me to watch out for the darkness. It wouldn't stop and it just sounded like it was getting closer and closer and louder and then I finally woke up."
"Ever since I've been stupidly paranoid. I can't sleep and I just feel like there's something I need to watch out for now."
He kisses your cheek.
"Why didn't you say anything sooner?"
"I didn't think you'd take it serious if I said anything."
"I know a thing or two about the supernatural world. There's nothing fake about it."
He was right. There wasn't anything about it that wasn't real.
"I wonder if it means something. Watch out for the darkness. It's super creepy."
"It might just be your brain scaring you but that does sound scary."
     You shrug.
"Maybe I'm just tired. I haven't slept well in a week."
Colby frowns and looks at you in the mirror.
"Listen. Let's go back to bed and if you get scared or start freaking out you can wake me up and we'll deal with it together. Okay?"
     "Okay."
You hold his hand as he leads you back to the bedroom. You shut off the bathroom light on the way out and stick close to him as you pass the darkened hallway.
You reach the room and Colby shuts the door. You  both lay down and you curl up against his side. He wraps his arm around you protectively.
"If you see something or hear something wake me up. I'm right here if you need me Y/N."
     "Alright. I love you."
     "I love you too."
You let the silence of the room fall over you. In a way, it's comforting. The darkness is becoming familiar, and almost calming. You'd rather hear silence than voices on a night like this.
