You set your phone on the table as Colby walks into the living room. He's on the phone with someone and seems happy about whatever they're talking about.
The call goes for a minute or two more and then he says goodbye and ends it. He comes and sits next to you and you put your feet across his lap.
"What was that about?"
"Sam and Kat and all the other ones from the old traphouse wanted to know if we felt like hanging out at the park today."
"I don't think we're doing anything, I'm down."
Your daughter, Star, toddles into the room and tries to climb up onto the couch to sit with Colby. She looks at him after she realizes she's too short to get up there. She makes a pouty face and grabs at the air because she wants him to pick her up.
He laughs.
"You want up?"
She nods.
"Maybe I won't..."
She frowns.
"Daddyyyyyy!"
He laughs again and scoops her up off the grounds. She laughs and hugs him. You smile at them being cute.
"Guess where we're going today princess!"
"It's one of your favorite places..." you add.
She thinks for a minute.
"The store?"
"No. Better."
"To see Jakey?" Colby looks at you and you both smile as she says that. That was her nickname for Jake, who was pretty much an older brother to her and one of her favorite people. Jake adored her almost as much as you and Colby did and they always had fun.
Colby shakes his head.
"We're going to the park!"
She squeals out of excitement and giggles.
"Are they there already?"
"Yeah, they're just starting to show up."
"Well, lets go then!"
Everyone gets up and Star grabs Colby's hand and leads him to the kitchen. She excitedly puts on her shoes and shows him how they light up. He picks her up and spins her around and by that time you have your shoes on also.
You open the door and let them walk in front of you. You take a picture and smile at how adorable they were together. Since the park was a block away, you usually walk there anyway. It was a pretty sunny day outside and a little breezy.
When you arrive at the park, you see Sam, Kat, Devin, Corey, Jake, Elton, and Tara. Aaron was out for the weekend so he couldn't be there.
You wave and they wave back.
"What's up guys?"
Everyone gets into talking and laughing and since you were best friends with Tara, Devin, and Kat, you gossiped and spilled a little tea. You hung out with them all the time since they lived close.
Star is already on the swings, playing with a couple of friends that are at the park. She was friends with basically every kid her age that came to the park so there was always someone to play with.
Everyone talks for a while and Aria goes to digging in the sand pit with her friends. Every little while, you look over to see Colby watching her, sometimes with a little smile on his face. You love how obsessed he is with her and hope they stay close even as she grows up.
It's getting kind of hot, so everyone moves to the shade of a huge tree nearby. Colby seems reluctant to leave his spot but goes with the group. Everyone sits in the grass.
Pretty soon, there's not much left to talk about and the boys are getting antsy.
"Elton, I dare you to parkour your way up to the top of the playground."
He laughs.
"Only if Colby does it after me."
Colby looks at you. You nod.
"Do it, you won't!"
Corey's taunting seems to make Colby want to do it.
"Fine Elton, I'll do it but if I get hurt your paying the hospital bill."
Everyone laughs and Tara says "GO!".
Elton gets a running start and jumps onto the wooden bridge and climbs his way up to the top of the playground. It takes him around a minute.
Everyone claps and you say "GO!" this time. Colby takes a different route and ends up walking on top of the monkey bars to get to the top of the playground. As he reaches the final gap, he goes to jump to the next platform up and trips. He puts his arms out to catch himself but there's nothing between the platform and the bars. He hits a lower platform pretty hard and then the ground.
You get up and rush over to him. Part of you wants to laugh because he's probably fine. He does dumb things all the time. Part of you is scared that he's hurt.
As you get to him, you see him laying on the ground.
"Fuuuuuck."
He groans and rolls over in your direction, holding his arms across his stomach.
"Are you okay?"
"I-
He's cut off as he spits out blood.
You crouch down next to him and put your hand on his shoulder.
"What happened?"
"I tripped and my ribs caught that platform really hard before I fell."
Suddenly, Star is by your side. She looks confused and kind of scared as she sees him.
He split his lip and you think he might've broken a rib since he was spitting so much blood.
"Daddy?"
He doesn't say anything because he's in so much pain. She steps closer to him.
She backs up at seeing the blood, her eyes wide.
She sort of hides behind you as you try to ask him where it hurts and other questions. Jake picks her up to comfort her because she seems mortified. He walks her behind everyone so she doesn't have to see Colby like that.
"What's wrong with him Jakey?"
"He was on the playground and he tripped and fell."
She buries her face into his chest as he holds her.
"He's okay, just a little hurt is all."
After a few minutes, Colby is able to sit up and lets you prod around a little bit. Where he says it hurts the most, you know there's something broken. It feels like a strangely hollow space where there should be bone. You can feel the parts where it's broken at.
He's not spitting blood as much and the only thing really bleeding is his lip. He looks a little bit better.
Jake looks at you, and you nod to let him know it's okay to bring Star back over since there's less blood and Colby doesn't look so bad.
Colby looks at Jake holding Star.
Jake mouths she's really scared. Colby nods slightly and Jake sets her down. She cautiously turns to look at Colby, who's sitting against a bar on the ground. She really does look scared.
"It's okay Star, he's alright."
She seems to loosen up a bit at that. She walks closer to him.
Her lip quivers as she sees his bleeding. He quickly wipes the blood off his lip and into the grass.
"See? All better. I'm okay princess, don't worry."
She goes and gives him a hug. He winces a little but hugs her back.
"I think it's best if we get him home."
You nod and Jake picks up Star again. Elton and Corey help Colby up and keep him standing as everyone walks back to your apartment.
They put Colby on the couch and everyone says goodbye and tells you that if you need anything to call them.
You bring him a pillow and a bucket for if he needs to spit anymore. He looks pale but it's just from the pain.
Star sits by him while you get him some water and pain pills to take. You give them to him and he takes them.
Soon, it's time for Star to go to bed so you tell her that.
"I don't want to."
"Why not?"
She looks at Colby and then back at you.
"Daddy will be okay. I'll take care of him baby."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
She gives him one last careful hug before you go put her to bed. When you come back, he's asleep already from the medication. You kiss his forehead and lay down on the recliner across from him.
