You hear the front door open and slam shut. Someone storms upstairs and slams another door.
You know immediately that it's your son, Trevor. Lately, he's been having a really hard time with his friends. Although he has really good grades, it's the people that are making school rough for him.
He just turned 15 and is nearing the end of his freshman year in highschool. He's always been a good kid and very smart but he's been seeming distant lately.
Colby comes home from a day out with Sam and Kat and puts his keys on the table. He walks by and gives you a kiss before going to the fridge and pulling out a box of leftovers from dinner last night.
"Hungry much?"
He nods, grabbing a fork and starting to eat. You laugh and get up off the couch to get a glass of water.
"Trevor's really upset about something. He came home a little while ago and didn't even say hi."
Colby finishes his food, tosses out the empty box, and puts the fork in the dishwasher.
"Did he seem mad?"
"Yeah, really mad. Slamming doors and all that."
"I'll go talk to him and try to find out what's going on."
You nod and Colby goes upstairs to Trevor's room. You take a sip of your water and set the glass down before going back to chill on the couch and watch tv.
There's about fifteen minutes where the air just feels tense. You can't hear what's going on but you have a bad feeling about it for some reason.
Soon, Colby comes down the stairs and goes straight to the bedroom you shared. You're so focused on the tv that you just barely hear him walk by.
You watch him turn the corner and go into the room.
That's weird. Normally, if anything had happened, he would at least tell you what was going on. You get up and go into the bedroom as well.
He's sitting on the bed, his head in his hands. Something is obviously wrong.
You cautiously sit next to him. He hardly notices.
It's silent for a minute or two but you can feel that something's hurting him.
"Am I...a bad father?"
"What makes you think that?"
"Trevor just looked me right in the face and told me he hated me."
You can feel Colby's pain as he speaks. His voice sounds tearful.
"You're one of the best dads out there and I have a feeling he's just getting tunnel vision from everything that's going on in his life. It's not your fault."
You begin to comfortingly rub his back. You don't know why Trevor would just flat out say that to him. They've always had such a good relationship.
"Did he say anything else?"
"He just told me to go away and that I wasn't helping. And then he said he... hated me. When I asked what was wrong."
"Listen, it's okay. I don't think he means what he's saying. He's too preoccupied with whatever he has going on to be the normal considerate Trevor that we're used to. It isn't your fault."
At hearing that, he nods a little and pushes back his hair. He sits up and looks at you.
You lean in and give him a kiss before getting up.
"I'm gonna go try to talk to him."
"Good luck."
You leave the bedroom and go upstairs to Trevor's. You knock lightly on the door and don't hear anything in response. Slowly, you push the door open and step into the room. He's laying on the bed, his head propped up by a pillow. You cautiously make your way over to the bed and sit next to him.
You see that he's crying and feel your heart break a little bit. Trevor has always been kind of sensitive and he's never really been rude to either of you. You know that he feels bad.
"Talk to me baby."
He takes a shaky breath and hugs the pillow tighter.
"I didn't mean to say that to him, I-I don't know what happened... I was just really mad about stuff at school and it came out all wrong."
You brush back his floppy hair and rub your thumb on his cheek.
"What's going on at school?"
"My friends are all leaving and people are lying to me and there's nothing I can do about it, I don't want to lose everybody... it's really scary that they're all trying to forget me at the same time."
"It's okay. Everything's going to turn out fine in the end. It might seem really bad now, but if you think about it, school's ending soon and you have all summer to make new friends and have fun. If they won't stick around, you never needed them in the first place. They'll realize how much they miss you when you're not friends with them anymore and they'll regret it."
He doesn't say anything at first but you can tell he wants to talk.
"What did I do wrong?"
"You did absolutely nothing wrong Trevor. Trust me. Anyone would be lucky to call you their friend and if they don't see that, they aren't worth your time. You'll find people who appreciate you for yourself and just because they might not be here yet doesn't mean they aren't out there. It's gonna be hard to let these ones go but you'll be alright in the end. I promise."
He nods, and you know he understands. He seems to feel a little bit better and wipes his tears.
You give him a hug and go to leave so he can be alone for a while. He seems to need it.
"Mom?"
You stop in the doorway and look back.
"Yeah Trev?"
"Can you tell Dad that I'm sorry?"
"Sure."
He thanks you and you give a smile before shutting the door and going back downstairs. Colby is leaning up against the countertop.
"He's okay now. He said to tell you he was sorry."
"I'm not mad at him. He's got a lot on his plate."
"When I got up there, he was crying because he felt so bad about saying that to you. That boy, I swear, he's the most precious thing."
That makes Colby smile a little.
"He's a good kid. I hope everything works out with his friends and school."
"It will. He'll be okay."
