I spent about an hour after they left debating whether or not I should go

"Come on, y/n, it'll be fun!"

"Of course it will, but look at me Jen, I don't look like you. I'm not gorgeous, I'm a garbage bag of sadness." I say, trying not to cry through my laughter.

I probably looked like a psycho. She looked at me a bit confused, and a bit sad. The way someone looks at their pet when they get into a sticky situation and can't get themselves out. Sort of pitiful and i tried with every fiber of my being not to scoff.

"Y/N, first of all you're gorgeous. Second, if you want to go, I can give you a makeover if that will help you feel better. Even though you're pretty already."

"You'd really do that?" I asked, a bit skeptical

She nodded. We agreed we would both go, fashionably late of course. On purpose, but it probably would've ended up that way anyway. I was always late to everything. We finished cleaning off the counters and putting a few stray dishes away before we hung up our aprons for the day. The hats came off too, and I could feel some stray hairs sticking to the plastic. Gross.

I loved working the ice cream shop in the summer because it really gave me the beachy summer vibes instead of my usual summertime depression, but what I didn't love was the sweat, the back pain and stains that inevitably followed the shift. Jen and I agreed to meet up at my house in an hour or so so we both had time to shower and do anything else we needed to.

The real question was if I should shave or not. How hard was trying too hard? I should probably do it to be safe. Not like anything was going to happen. It's me.

Before I can find something cute to wear, the doorbell rings. I shuffle through massive heaps of clothes scattered across my floor and scream "i'll get it!" to anyone who might be home

Jenny is beaming and she's got her rosy blonde locks curled to perfection, a tiny little sundress and wedges on.

"Um, Jen. You know there's going to be sand on that beach right?"

"Yeah and?"

"You're gonna sink into it"

"Fashion is pain, darling" she says in her most theatric voice

I chuckle and she follows me up the stairs to my room. She gasps at the huge mess.

"Sorry I keep meaning to clean up, you can sit on my bed for now." I say

She plops down, while I throw clothes across the room, continuing my search for something to wear.

"That right there." She says, pointing to a mauve piece of fabric. I pull it out from one of the mountains.

"This?" I say, holding it up for her to see in all its splendor.

"Yes." She says, more sure now.

"Its a halter top and it's pink."

"Yes it is, and it will look so good on you."

"I haven't worn this in so long, it shows so much skin."

"Yes, and wow you have skin like everyone else, who knew?"

She jumps off the bed and starts digging through the piles herself. She pulls a pair black jeans out and throws them at me. "bathroom, now. Go put them on."

"But they're all wrinkly" I wine

"well if we like them then we can iron them, if not then there's no point" she shrugs

I follow her command and come slinking back to the bedroom.

"Oh my god. Y/N you look so fucking good" she says

"No way."

"Do you have a mirror in here?" She asks

I close my bedroom door to reveal a full length mirror and take a look at myself. I don't look half bad, I don't feel as misshapen as I normally do.

"Bitch, you got a body!" she screams. I blush at the comment.

I rummage through my jewelry and add a lotus necklace and some stud earrings. I grab my birkenstocks and slip them on, sighing at the comfort.

"I was gonna say no way to the birks, but they look cute. Anyway, ready?" she asks

"wait, do we even know where their bonfire is?"

"Yeah, Josh texted me the address." She grinned

"When did you even get his number? I was standing there the whole time, and I didn't see that happen."

"He slipped it in my back pocket as they were leaving"

"That's so cute" I gush "okay i think i'm ready lets go"
