"There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other."
~Douglas H. Everett

It's been exactly 11 months, 2 weeks and 5 days since Ava's mother started dating Andy Hemmings. A charming business man. A CEO of his own company. And probably soon to be Ava's step father. Ava met Andy plenty of times. He was kind, and sweet and he made her mother laugh which was really the only important thing Ava needed to know. He made her mother happy. And yet in all those months, she had never met his son. From what Ava's heard, he was always somewhere abroad but she never tried to know more. Until one Saturday night, when the two families finally had dinner together at the Walker house.

"Andy and Luke will be here any minute now so be ready."

From her mother's voice, Ava could hear she was nervous. Neither of them have met Luke yet and since things were getting quite serious between her and Andy, Rosalie was very scared that Luke might not like her. Ava understood that all though she didn't see the point in trying to impress a boy her age. If their parents loved each other he'd just have to accept that. But still, she looked herself in the mirror. The black dress she had on looked pretty enough, the mascara made her already big eyes look better and the gentle red lip gloss drew attention to her full lips. She didn't like the way she looked but it was all to please her mother and help her impress the 17 year old son. Not too long after, the sound of a doorbell was heard through the entire house and both Ava and her mom went to the door. Her mom got a kiss on the cheek from Andy as a greeting and Ava got a light hug. Things still weren't completely natural between the two of them but that was understandable, since they didn't spend lots of time together. Behind Andy, stood his son.

"Rose, Ava, this is my son Luke."

Luke made an uncomfortable smile and barely managed to say hi.

"Luke these are my girlfriend Rose and her daughter Ava. I believe you two are the same age so that should make it easier to...you know....bond."

The look was exchanged between the teenagers and Ava tried to soak in as much detail about Luke as she could. He had blonde quiff and sky blue eyes. The most distinguishable thing on his face was his lip ring on which he was nervously tugging on as the look was exchanged. He was wearing a plane white tee with black skinny jeans and black converses. Nothing on him told Ava anything about him that would really matter. After the uncomfortable few minutes they all sat down to dinner. The conversation was awkward to say the least and nor Ava nor Luke talked much. They didn't even look at each other as far as Ava knew.

"I am beyond happy that both of our families are together tonight so that is why,"

Andy pulled out a black, cubic box and everyone at the table knew, he was about to propose. He opened the box and it was a very beautiful ring made from white gold with a blush pink crystal on it. Ava's mom gasped and already had tears in her eyes.

"I decided the best night to do this is right now. Rosalie. From the moment we went out for the first time I knew I never wanted to let you go. You are selfless, beautiful, kind and I love you for all that you are. I know it's soon but there is no time to waste when you know who you want to spend the rest of your life with. So, my dearest, would you to me the honors of becoming my wife?"

Her mother's face could be classified as pure joy as she nodded and kissed her fiancée. Ava looked at her new step brother and he had total surprise written on his face. It was clear that this was his first encountering with the love their parents shared.

"Congratulations mom, Andy. I'm really happy for you."

Ava's mom smiled at her and Andy thanked her. Luke tried congratulating too, but his words didn't sound nor did his face looked honest. Nonetheless, the newly engaged couple thanked him and the chit chat went on for some time, before the next announcement was dropped.
