"How's the arm?" I asked.

Isaac looked up at me and with the most sarcastic tone he could muster, said, "It's as good as new. Thanks."

I had tried my best to patch it up, but because it was a bite from an alpha it didn't heal as well as a regular injury. I also wasn't the best at dealing with Isaac when he was injured because he had a tendency to lash out.

"I'm trying my best. Give me some slack," I grumbled.

"Why did she do that?" Isaac asked.

"I have no idea," I sighed.

It had been a week since she left. I had tons of questions and even more anger to go with them. My anger was subsiding with the amount of time she was gone though. I just needed answers.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Sure, I guess," I replied.

"Why do you like Maria? I mean, like not generally," Isaac replied.

"I don't really know. From the moment we met something about her pulled me in. I think it was her eyes. They just seemed different," I considered.

"I don't notice anything about her eyes. I guess they're okay," Isaac said.

"They look so bright and alive. I think they're probably the most beautiful part about her," I said, feeling awkward from my confession, "Not to sound like a bitch or anything."

Isaac looked at me quizzically for a moment before pulling out his phone. He searched for a photo of blue eyes before settling on one and showing it to me.

"These are her eyes," Isaac said.

"No, those aren't right. Those eyes look pale." I shook my head.

"This might sound crazy, but hear me out. When my parents met they used to keep telling me all those disgusting lovey-dovey stories kids don't want to hear, but they always thought the eyes were the most important feature." Isaac took a breath, "I think Maria might be your mate."

"That's nuts. First, I'm human. Second, she's bitten, she can't have a mate," I dismissed him.

I heard a knock and went to the front door to open it. Maria was standing before me, and she looked sheepish standing as she was. Her hair was considerably shorter and looked like a rats nest.

"Can I come inside?" She asked.

I stepped aside to let her in. She went immediately to Isaac.

"I don't know what happened, but I'm extremely sorry. You know I would never mean to hurt you," Maria said, with tears brimming in the back of her eyes.

Isaac stood up to his full height, towering over Maria.

"You didn't," He growled.

"Yeah, I did."

"Did what?" I asked.

"She's human."

She turned to look at me, her hands clasping and unclasping nervously. Her eyes were different now, and I found myself believing what Isaac said. I felt deflated. This woman was supposed to be my soulmate, and she had just taken that away from me.

The love I had for her faded along with her eye color. Isaac was right about her eyes being pale, and they almost looked lifeless. I wanted nothing to do with them. They weren't her real eyes.

"How dare you?" I asked.

"I want to put my family back together again. I also don't like feeling so out of control when I would shift. I made myself nervous," She admitted.
